BIG BIG THANKS TO ALL THOSE THAT HELPED ME !!

went to screwfix and bought a new grundfos 15/50 and drained the system again, and fitted the new pump.

bled all the rads, and fired her up. was silent from the off

bled the pump and all rads again after it had ran for a while, and so far, so good!

i cant belive its taken me this long to sort the fooker out

big thanks to Pete, Steve, Focus V*, Euan, Paul and everyone else that had an input

right, my diagnosis of what was happening is:

as the heating kicked in, the gas in the heat exchanger would fire up, but the pump wouldnt run, as if it was seized.

the banging was most likely to be the water boiling in the heat exchanger with nowhere to go, hence the water from the cold feed going back into the tank in the loft.

the gas would then cut out as its gotten too hot in the H/E. when it had cooled enough, it fired up again and repeated until the pump started and pumped the water out.

thats my theory anyway.

so hopefully now the gas and electric bills will be less, as the pump is on speed setting 1, and i have turned down the temp.

thanks again everyone - best £65 ive ever spent! (plus £15 for the big spanner and £6 for the pump valves, but they dont fit as they are too long, so they can go back along with the spanner as it doesnt look like i have used it lol )

Thats great news Dan as said its difficult to diagnose anything over the net

So fair play to all those who said it was the pump

thanks everyone, we really do appreciate the advise/info as it was just too cold for the littleone i was almost on my own for a few days lol

i did put a post up ages ago, but no one replied lol

anyway, its quiet, no banging etc and all seems to be good so far. i have had to mount the pump the way the old one was as the control panel wont fit on with it horizontal, and you couldnt shut the door.

its easy enough to lay flat if i can be arsed to do something with the control box, but the other pump lasted god knows how long like it, so hopefully we would have moved long before lol.

pete, whats your address mate the others i will buy a beer at a show or something lol

thanks again everyone
