New bodyshells would be a massive benefit to the whole scene. I mean, they manage to make new "heritage" shells for MGb's and minis dont they?

Imagine the demand for new Mk1 escort shells etc etc...

Thats the only way you'll ever even get close to "new" old fords.

When i had my 2.0 Nova,i always thought it would be a good idea to re make a limited run of 1000, but have the latest suspension, the new vxr turbo engine and ecu, but with original styling.

Or

old renault 5 turbo with the new megane sport engine and running gear.

Mines been ok only had a few daft faults like a fuel filter been blocked cause it had never been changed in its life.I just love the older looking cars cause they have so much characiter compared to the cars what are out now with the big headlights that nearly touch the A pillars.

Ford need to do something!! For me ford died the day the escort cosworth ceased production.

There been nothing since, i know some will bang on about the FRS, ST etc, but they are in a totally lower league as far as im concerned.

The ford scene seems to be rapidly slowing down, with the newest RST's a good 20 years old now, its all getting a bit boring.

Ive gone back to my roots and now reside in german motors, For me the VAG group cars are the way foward from the stale old ford rs scene!

i think the trouble is they'v no imagination in building new car's they all look like the same dull mess n usually are exept different body pannels like the new fez it look's just like the new corsa, n have to admit 80's was the best era for car's like the group B rally cars that they banned cos too powerfull my fave has to be a lancia stratos n i can proudly say that on here cos even though italian with a ferrari engine it had a capri diff admitted abit of a wrong mix n did fail alot lol but must of been the bollox when runnin properly

I think nowadays theres too much pressure on manufacturers to build Green/Eco cars, back in the 80s alot of cars were based around being a "drivers" car, now its all about safety not many Rwd cars about now compared to what there was

i like the cars that used to be made over here that are made in obscure countrys, like the old beetle in mexico, the hillman hunter in india ( you better google hillman hunter)
morris oxford in somewhere hot.
would be nice to do a post on old cars that are still produced, infact my local toyota dealer sells the old vw vans that are brand new from mexico or brazil,i dunno where to be exact as they are about 30 grand and i'm not looking at a 30 grand old van you can buy for a few grand and original with rust and filler

Regarding parts, did Ford not remake certain RS 500 parts in the mid to late 90's?

Don't see why it would be hard for them to starting making ever just rare parts again (as long as they still have/own rights to the tooling) Things like RS bodykits, panels etc would sell like hotcakes!

I would imagine the large scale presses for these are long scrapped? I may be wrong though?

Thats the frustrating thing, the price of a decent Heriatage shell is IMO, a cheaper alternative to restorting a rusty rotten example.

I agree, ford or someone would make an absolute fortune at it?

Ford would certainly not "make a lot of money" by re-making old shells.. It costs a fortune to set up a plant for this kind of job.. they'd have to sell 10,000+ probably to break even at a wild guess.

Press release I'd like to see......

"Ford have announced they are to release a special 25 year anniversary version of the original hot hatch boy racer car, the RS Turbo. The MK3 Escort bodyshell, will inside look exactly like the 1984 release inside, whilst the engine, suspension, and brakes, coming from the new Focus RS."

Imagine that, an S1 with good brakes

Maybe an Escos running the 2.5 RS unit.

I read the first line of your post then was going to put, people wouldn't like it because it lacks "character". I've never really seen the word "character" used to describe something good as bad. Its always used to describe something bad, and make it sound like thats a bonus. Totally baffles me.

Anyway, my Evo's got character, a nice pleasant 1, i get in it, turn the key, it starts, i drive it, i drive home, i park it up. (boring? No, GOOD!)

If they made old cars new again people wouldn't buy them i don't think, because they'd cost a lot! Who'd pay Ł20k for a standard Saph cossy?

Some reckon it would be nice if Ford started making MK1 & 2 Escort shells? No way man, they were rubbish then and only any good now because of the huge modifying scene.

Being a supplier of Ford parts for the last 12 years I have been to Genk and Halewood loads of times, asking the question. What happened to the presses? The answer is they were tired, at the end of there production and duly recycled

Heritage MG and Mini shells are being produced now due to forward thinking and a company that let the equipment go for next to nowt. It would have been good if Ford had thought the same but unfortunately theres more profit in the new model. Look at how many Mondeos and Focus's they made in the last 10 years.

Well , VW have gone back with the scirocco ( or however you spell it ) but im more shocked that no one has bought out a mk2 escort kit car with the donor car being a mk5 escort. If that was on sale , I would buy one......massive gap in the market.

As youve prob guessed i love mk2 escorts.

The yanks are getting 'new' muscle car panels made in Thailand and building them into shells.

http://www.dynacornclassicbodies.com/ford_models.html

Group buy on type 49 Mk1 Escort shell anyone ?

That's the (relatively) easy part. The problem is new cars today are bound by a zillion regulations on external safety, eg to humans that get hit.. bonnets have to be a certain distance from the engine etc.. basically an old 80's shell couldn't become road legal and look the same or remotely similar really. This is part of the reason why so many cars look similar these days.
