Default Bank Accounts.

Right i gotta change my bank account as the Halifax is helping me dig a very big hole with their excessive charges

Any suggestions on a 'good' bank and/or bank account in this period of economic doom and gloom?

All the same, you'll get 10 people saying one is great, and another 10 saying its shit.
If you don't stick to their terms, you will be hit with charges whichever bank you go with, so I'd suggest sorting your finances out rather than blaming the bank (in the nicest possible way).

Nationwide has the lowest charges

but the route to you problems is incurring the charges in the first place bud - stay in for 2 months and live like a peasant, that's what i did when i was a youth to get me out of the vicious circle

the only bank and i mean only... would help me out was Loyds TSB and they were really great, got me out of a hole and still gave me a great account etc... worth a try as all the rest were as useful as a chocolate fire guard

I've not worked for 3 months now and i'm doing my best to cover my bills with the little money i'm getting in. I need another account so i can pay my debts/bills so that Halifax don't keep taking the money i put in and use it against their own excesive charges.

Ł38 charge for a Ł4 DD... Yeah thats reflective of the direct debit.

I'm in dispute with them over their charges anyway as
Under the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 charges must reflect administration costs and cannot be punitive, as they do not reflect the true cost of going into an unauthorised overdraft.

Plus i asked for advice on banks not MY issues with the Halifax.

Like i said, its completely subjective....my ex was with Llyods and got hammered with charges so went to HSBC on my recommendation and found them excellent in comparison.
Until the court ruling between OFT and the banks is settled, they will all charge far too much.

im with lloyds on a select account and they charge you Ł15 per monthly fee plus Ł15 per day upto a max of 10 days per callender month charges for going over your limit. so that unpaid DD could cost you dearer. say it was due the middle of the month and you got paid at the end that could be Ł15 x 10 + Ł15 monthly charge= Ł165 .
lloyds used to be good and would come and go if you gave them prior warning but not anymore with the recession. theyre out to screw as much as they can themselves.

Are you sure you want to open an account with Lloyds TSB? given that Lloyds HBOS are now one of the same group.

one good way is to use a non mainsteam little local bank or building society, that way if someone else trys to freeze your wages for debts they wont find your account as they only check the mainstream banks for your account.

I was also with lloyds and to be honest they are pretty rubbish.
I have joined Barclays and the customer service is good, charges are resonable, Lots of packages to suit your needs.

theres bound to be a small local independent bank down your way, ive no idea who but there will be. Dartford Savings Bank for example , look through your local yeloow pages but you need one that is independent and not owned by a bigger name.
open a wages account with them once you find one and your money be safer if your in a fix. if you dodge any moneys owed to the old bank they will chase you.if you want to default on your debts thats one way to avoid your wages being arrested although if you have your house in your name thats a problem they will still find you.
it depends on how deep a hole your in.

when i phone lloyds 99% of the time its a foreign national that answers, likely indian or similar call centres. its more hassle than its worth trying to communicate so i tell them to get someone english/scottish/british to phone me back so i can understand what they are saying.

I was with Halifax, but they closed my account, had incurred no charges, but they called the police when I refused to leave the branch(Thetford) as they REFUSED to give me my money asked for, cheque had been cleared 2 weeks, but they said I needed to tell them where the cheque was from, the exact amount it was for, why I wanted the money, so I refused to leave until they gave me my money, not all of it as can only get Ł1200 a day, had Ł5K+ in there, had this more than once with Halifax, comments like how do you have that sort of money etc etc, as you don't have wages paid in.
I said what the F**K has it got to do with you, after they at first refused my money, they confirmed the cheque had cleared ok, was from NU.
To be honest they did me a massive favour as I joined the Natwest, so different, they couldn't be more helpful and human, just wish I'd made the move earlier, had been with halifax 13 years before that.
Joined natwest got overdraft I didn't want never used one before, but it doesn't cost so makes no difference.

ive been with lloyds and hsbc. now with nationwide and have not ahd any problems with them at all.

You get english people on the phones and you can get through to the branch rather than a call centre. helpful staff, low charges and good interest rates.

If a massive amount went out of your account you'd sure as hell wnat to know where it had gone though!

Banks have to be SO CAREFUL as to not break money laundering rules. My boss couldnt have any of the proceeds from her house sale out of her bank account until she'd proved where it was from...Id be glad the banks are checking these sorts of things rather than letting any tom dick and harry put irregular money in their account and maybe aid criminal organisations.

I hate the Halifax. When I go in to speak to someone, they tell me to go to the phone they have for this situation and phone up. So, I am in my Branch in Liverpool on the phone to a woman in Scotland. What's that all about?
