Strong Diffs with ratios 3.6-3.9 (upto 600bhp)..
Been thinking about doing myself a beam with a bigger diff, I dont have 1000s to spend so ideally the diff needs to be cheap or come from a std car like supra, skyline etc... suitable for round about 600 bhp.
So basically I could do with some suggestions on strong diffs that don't weight the earth like the Jag diffs.
I would go Jag but the weight is putting me off quite a bit, I want the car light. plus its aimed at huge power figures whi I am not going to chase.
Your suggestions please
Thanks
Dan

Couple floating about for 2k, or there was.
then you need the 2wd beam for that.
if you dont want to spend stupid amounts of money, why not just go for the 2wd beam and utilise a Gripper or Quaife 7.5" diff, after all its only seeing 66% of the power, so thats not even 400bhp thru the rear wheels on a 600bhp car!

yes full rwd, I can make my own beam so cost of the beam not a problem. I dont want to spend £1000s on grippers or 9 inch diffs. Ideally I want a diff below about £500 that I can mate up the shafts with and have a budget setup that performs the same as £3000 setups.
I am trying to spec the whole car to be good at about 500bhp. I will slowly ramp up the power but I dont want to do everything twice.
Cheers

Have a look over on http://www.merkurtech.com/merkurtech...pages/main.php , about 2/3 down the page you'll see some pics from a guy called David Godfrey, he put a 8.8" diff on the rear beam:

9 " diffs / 8.8 " diffs, is this the distance across the std mounting flanges that would be 7" or 7.5" normally?

My Jag 10.5" cost me £20 & then £440 for a rebuild. You wont break it thats for sure. 7 years & up to 750ft-lb blasted through it time after time.
With Power Loc grip is incredible.

yeh pretty much, ad a couple more for a 9" (id weigh it but its in the car)
we did the jag conversion some 10 years ago (even more now i suspect) because money was even tighter, and there was not that much choice ford 9" units were alot more than they are now even, and after you have changed so many std diffs the loss of entry fees and competative mileage became a bit of a bind, hence the jag conversion, came with a std heavy duty plated LSD - you just couldnt go wrong, apart from the weight, the later units are a fair bit lighter than the one i used, and all this 10.5" bit comes from the size of the crown wheel that i measured for a 3.77 ratio, others are bigger or smaller ratio dependant.
just a bit of info for yoall !!

8.5 or 8.8 US diff or a jag, all require fab work and driveshaft output work, but if you want a fit and forget diff for reasonable money its in the option at that power really.

Nice shout lincoln.
Basically as far as I can see the Jag diff conversion requires a LOT of fab work and highly custom shafts. I'm after a diff to use that I can mate up with std 2wd shafts/stub shafts to keep the costs down.
IIRC the outer cv's on the Jag diff conversions use GrpA joints...which wouldn't be cheap.
The M3 diff and the 8.8 look like good suitable diffs to use with minimal fab work for the 8.8 compared to the jag diff. The jag diff sits almost too far forward to get the output shafts to line up so means lots of fab work. The 8.8 hangs out of the back like a cossie diff so it's majority bracketry to get it to fit.....just thinking of time taken to fab it up..plus I can get laser cut parts done so makes sense to research options.
Jimbo, thanks for the offer to weigh the diffs, I picked one up (well tried) at Wills and it was F*cking heavy....I saw a complete beam too and it just looked too heavy duty for my needs....especially when i'm spending money on things to save weight
Cheers Guys, didnt expect much response to this thread for some reason.

I know I could use std 2wd shafts, that that'd defeat the object as the shafts would be a weak link. I'm looking to put the 8.8 us diff in mine now as these look to be very reasonably priced with lots of upgrades. Plus the work has been done by the merkur boys in the us on how to get them to fit.....so i'll probably just modify their theme.

ive never seen any, ive seen the joints explode due to lack of maintenance, these being mega high mileage items,
good luck with the conversion though pal.

If I can come out of this with a 6 degree beam, set up for a 8.8 inch US diff for less than a grand then I think its a good idea. Bearing in mind I can make it all myself.. only expense is the diff.
Thanks for your input Markk, much appreciated...I still san't see me going Jag though . Just not what I want tbh, and lots of work to make.
Cheers

might be an idear, once you have designed all the mounts to run a few copys off as i would imagen you would have no problem selling them!
might even pay for your one!

If you end up with the 8.8"
Ive a 28spline Torsen here if you've any interest.
Although ideally you'd want 31spline as its stronger.
Well..the shafts can be anyway.
