Default Ford Focus RS-Gen me up.

Hi all,

Seeing as ive seen a few threads about Kelv and Lampchop raving on about them being dirt cheap these days i decided to have a look on pistonheads.
I remember looking about 3-4months ago and not seeing one for less than 14k!

Ive got a budget of 10k, possibly 11k if it has already had the exhaust and remap done.

So gen me up, would be an everyday driver, what they like to live with?
What sort of power can you push out of them without changing the turbo and spending silly money?
And any good insurance companies? Also what group insurance are they?

Anything other info uve got please feel free to add.

cheers
Andy

Thought you had now decided to keep your Sassy?

Could you pm me over a spec, price and some pics.

Just had a quote of admiral of £2.3k full comp which i dont think is bad for age 20.

Andy, one of the best places ive found on the net for FRS info is the RSOC.

The FRS section on there is quite lively and has some good guys (and girls) that are willing to share there experiences and 'how to' etc.

300bhp seems possible, but its not so much the turbo thats holding it back on power, as more the cat, exhaust and the manifold.

from what ive read, and gathered from input with alot of guys - the usual route of power consists of a decent Exhaust and Decat and a K&N induction Kit, these make the car so much more drivable and do release a healthy lump of power.
from there you would be looking at a decent actuator replacement and then an ECU reflash - wether it be Tuna, Dreamscience or Bluefin (as everyone has there own prefference on what they preffer and for there own reasons)
or even Karl @ NMS is now doing some good work and remaps on thse aswell.

at this point your now severly being held back by the exhaust manifold, and these seem to vary in price from £750 - £1200 dependant on what you want - PD so far seems to come out wth flying colours.

other than that theres only odd silly things to look out for, and most is easily put right.

if its got a slight leak on the passenger footwell, then someones replaced the pollen filter under the scuttle panel and not resealed it properly - its not an expensive job to replace the scuttle and seal anyway - and most ford dealers seem to keep this in stock.

Wiper motor relays can play about so the front wipers go a bit daft on intermediate, but again it take 10 mins and a few quid to put right.

standard front discs are quite expensive to replace, so always handy if theyve been recently done.

im sure others will add input as this progresses.

oooh, 2.4k fully comp, are you mad!?!?
are you seriously thinking of paying that, as thats alot of money you could put to use elsewhere mate.

im a bit older than you, and mines under £400

Cheers for that Kelv, yeh heard about the pollen filter problem before.
And id idealy like to pay a hell of alot less but ahh well.

Just after a car i can cruise to work in and get high 20 mpg wise, and also know itll start every morning and then when the red mist comes down i can give it a good old back lane blast and play with some quick machinery.

Just sick of fixing the celica, seems there is always something wrong with it and its lucky if it returns 18mpg!

Im paying £1400 tpft to insure the celica!

12.5k if you include insurance. My advice to you in this current climate is buy a cheap runaround and then feel smug in the knowledge you have no debt and maybe 10K + in the bank while the rest of your mates have gone nuts with their first credit cards and now can't afford a beer on a saturday night.

I dont see the point leaving my 11k in my bank account and driving a shit car that i dont like.
Buy a future classic at a price i can quite happily afford and enjoy the car i own with the money ive worked hard for.
I have no debts, and go out on the piss most Saturday nights so money aint an issue fella.

Oh and ive also got the money from what ever i get from my celica.

Im just looking round at the moment, not going to be buying till about mid to end of january.

You are completely insane if your spend any serious CASH on a car now.... you will piss it all away in the next 12 months in depreciation.....

I would have a loan for the money over 3 years and leave the cash in the bank, in the mean time if you need to pay off the loan you can cover it, if you dont need to at the end of the 3 years you have the residual value of the RS and the 11k + interest in the bank.

No no no
The best way to do it is to Loan the money to yourself. Buy the car with the savings. Then set up a direct debit to pay back what the car cost over 3 years so you end up with your money back in 3 years
Why let the Bank earn from you when you can do it yourself
Im self employed and looking to get a new Van in january and thats how i will be doing it
Gonna pay myself a little interest as well seeing as the back would have done so
Also i will get the tax back on the van as well
So, if you have the money do it that way dude, it makes sence

No NO NO NO...

1 month you're a bit short, "loan repayments" (savings) suffer.. then another and then another.... missus wants some shoes etc...

You must be ultra disciplined to do it your way.

This way you dont have to be... just pay a bill as normal.

Also in an isa you will get 5.5% where as you'll get a loan of 7.8% the difference in what it costs you is negligable..

Your way you are building up to the 11k so your interest earned will be peanuts....

In this day an age.. at this moment in time.. CASH is king... the more you have in the bank the better...

But either way is acceptable....

Your both wrong, buying a car via loan is just stupid no matter how you look at it. Loans to cover mortgages of actual long term investments like a house is sensible, but not towards a hobby source! Just buy with your own cash.

Great cars mate and i love mine. Most things seem to be covered already.

Another common problem is the thermostat seal and/or housing cracking causing water leaks. Mine was leaking when i got it and a £1.30 seal sorts it
