Its all about the torque, i used to well into landrovers and general off roading, there was a few abut then and they were so much better than the athsmatic su carbed v8's and plain efi ones.
You get another extra 100 bhp or thereabouts i think and loads more torque

I've driven a land rover defender 90 with a 4 litre V8 in it
It was a bit of a crazy thing on the road with the jacked up suspension and off road tyres!

Std 3.5 V8 in land rover or range rover was 135bhp, as was lower compression(8.7:1) version to that fitted to cars(9.35:1), the cars SD1 had 155bhp on su's 190 on injection, twin plenum injection were rumoured to be 220, but never seen anything to confirm this, and road test bear out hat there was little difference between the two.
TVR V8 = ROVER V8, they were just built at different times, but correctly called BMW built rover/tvr engines, as this is when they went over to the cross bolt a redesign by bmw, but not all were machined for crossbolt on the 3950cc(3.9/4.0) they all had close fitting caps regardless of cc.
TVR's power figures are the biggest load of bullshit going, take away 60-80bhp then you'd be about right.
The last "350bhp" powered chimera put out 286bhp, after the fitment of a better cam, owner confirmed it was "wild" after set up, with 64 bhp less !!
It was so much better an different that he nearly lost if coming out of a bend, I know as my ass was in the passenger seat that is now brown and smelly!
400bhp tvr is around 320/330, best I've ever seen on 400 rated was 338bhp.
One of the primary reasons they are crap power wise is they use a shit management like the rangey pictured, the tvr even uses mechanical distributor with old fashioned advance retard weights, a SKODA is more advanced, juts putting on a decent mappable ignition only ecu can net 35bhp.

I've got a ZF 4HP22/24 built by John Lovegrove of ATP in Bristol in my garage doing nothing, was for a V8 mondeo(rwd), it uses a BMW 850 tail end for 2wd with all uprated 22/24 parts, plus stall lock up to 4500rpm, and rated at 700lbft.
