Default Shelf life of tyres

Do they have one?

Need two new tyres and I have been offered two brand new A539's but they have been sat in a garage for two maybe three years. Will they still be ok to use?

Yeah they will be ok, just check them for flat spots first if they have been stored upright. If they have been out in the sun then they may have cracked, but in a garage they will be fine

Check the date of manufacture on they tyres as I'm sure there's an MOT requirement that they must be 5yrs old or less to pass.

I don't think it's well-known and maybe only applies to commercials as my tester pointed this out to a customer when he brought his van in for a test.

Someone feel free to tell me if I'm talking bollocks tho.

sorry to the guys who have posted already , but nowhere in the mot testing guide does it mention the age of a tyre
as for storing them in the dark , is that not for mushrooms ?
every tyre has the date of manufacture stamped on the sidewall , will be in an oval stamp
ie a tyre made in mid aug 2008 will have 31 / 08 stamped inside the oval meaning 31st week of 2008 , the wholesaler we use says they cant sell a tyre thats over 3 years old
hope this helps a bit , once you check the tyre you just have to decide if you want a 5 or 6 or whatever year old tyre fitted to your car

MOT fail for out of date tyre's? Customers who come to me with their summer toys that barely manage a 1000miles a year would love that one and the bufty boys with their Dunlop D40's would be crying into their microfibre cloths

My yokohamas have been on for over 6 years now i bet! Nothing wrong with them at all either, in fact they still look almost new.

for reference i got a pair of goodyear eagle F1s GSD1s irrc. that were unused but had been stored for 6 years, in the dark. they were very very slippy the first 50 miles or so but after scrubbing off a little they were fantastic. they seemed fine all the time i had them on.

Nope, the UV in the sunlight dries out and cracks the rubber

ive never heard of it failing an mot on age but they do have a shelf life for selling.

there is a mark as said abpve. the week in the year it was made. i know for a fact that kwik fit has to get shot of any tyres over 3 years old due to safety
