Top Gear: Why didn't fiesta hydraulic in the sea?
Hi Guys,
The Top Gear episode last night showed a new Fiesta exiting a landing craft and then driving up the shore to the beach. I have not seen the episode, however a few of my mates are discussing it on e-mail and are not sure why the engine didn't conk out. They said that the water went right over the bonnet on the initial splash down and then it was in the sea to a decent depth for around 30 seconds.
Usually a car needs adapting with a remote airfilter setup which takes air in from much higher (around roof height). I am looking for ur guys views on why it didn't draw water in through the airfilter and hydraulic?
Anyone?
Cheers!
RW

I'm sure it would have done if its only a small little soaking and it didn't ingest any water....
or maybe.... they had TWO cars?!?!?!?!?

maybe it was done with smoke and mirrors?
Andy from this forum was on the shoot.... maybe he could reveal all?!?!?!
I can hardly wait!!!

whilst we all thought it was very average!

Probably just took of the airfilter and sealed up the inlet for the deep water shoot.

What next, inconsistancies on east enders?
Topgear is a comedy entertainment show loosely based around the concept of reviewing and driving cars, almost nothing on it is accurrate.
Just watch and enjoy, dont stop to notice the fact its full of bollocks or it will ruin it.
RW, when they have all their races, do you think they ACTUALLY race?
Like when May raced the BMX'ers through prague and there were a dozen or more shots from static cameras along the route, do you think the BBC took 12 camera crews to line the route, or do you think they shot the whole thing in small sections and then pasted it together to make a story of a race?
Would have expected better from someone inteligent like you

my exes uncle works at that marine base waterproofing landrovers and he waterproofed 3 identical fiestas for the show , so i wouldnt advise taking your new fiesta through any deep puddles!!

stfu u total cvnt
I was in Dubai last week and one of the lads there had the clarkson vid where he compares the lambo's the ferrari f430, the gt3 997 and eventually one of them tries the veyron out on the public road. I was offered to watch it and started ranting about how much I hate the show because of the BULLSH!T that they say, feeding the average punter who doesn't know much about cars full of sh1t.
However 5 mins into the video I have to admit that I was laughing my ass off and all of it was highly entertaining, UNTIL he said that the reason powerful mercs n BMW's were ltd to 155mph was because they were not designed to go fast and parts fell off them which had my ranting at the tv, then they had the stig vs sabine in the gt3 vs r8 in the most bullshit staged race ever which reminded me how much I fucking HATE the fakeness of it. Especially when you take into account that the JAPs manage to do so much of a better job, giving the cars to their jurno's and letting them literally race each other (often resulting in dented cars) and the winner is the winner.
So, to help explain the surprise you all are displaying at my "ridiculous question", in this particular case, a friend who likes his cars, asked if I had seen it via email today and told me the water went over the bonnet and was surprised that the car made it. He was quite convinced it was real and didn't mention seeing anything dodgy about a rope etc, so I gave him my 4 options (based on not having seen the clip):
1. It had a snorkel airfilter (he said he couldn't see one)
2. It wasn't a regular combustion engine and was maybe an electric engine in a sealed compartment
3. It was total luck it didn't hydraulic (but he said it was under the water for 30 secs or so, so that was out of the window)
4. It was total bullshit and a stunt. (which u lot have confirmed)
Unfortunately I couldn't watch it on BBC iPlayer at work, so I asked u lot, who I know would have watched it.... So thanks for clearing up it was bullshit, u sarcastic chumps, all diving in there to take the piss....

the exhaust would have had to be outside the water as well
the most obvious one was the bullet train race where he was 150 miles behind it one minute, and the next, he was ahead of it

) but the BBC will say that educational TV doesn't draw in viewers and they need to make TG "entertainment" Though I'm sure Documentaries are fairly popular.I say that TG only works when its doesn't rely on staged events. (like the German special) I can accept caining round a shopping centre, (even with a staged crash into Brithdays for comedy effect) I can accept messing around with the Marines. If it LOOKS natural that's fine.
But I wish they would stop making up/being creative with actual facts. Either be correct when talking about 155mph limiters, or don't mention it at all. It'll work much better. AND they won't alienate their core audience of Car fans.
I thought it was a really good show. Not the best, but no where near as bad as the grumblers insist.
Was worth it alone for the sheer scale and planning that went into the Fiesta test and that insane R500! How on the limit was Stig!

Why get upset at a joke? The show's full of silly offhand comments about all kinds of cars. It's part of what makes the programme what it is...

I enjoyed the show last nite. I even liked the bit about the shit cars like the lada. The first thing i said to my wife about the fiesta is how is it still going in all that water. Me and a mate of mine drive his work van through a over flown river years ago and he hydroliced his engine in the van. We were going down this dark country lane and it was like hitting a brick wall.
I am completely with you- I enjoyed top gear...
If you want a moan, the weeks before one was shit with the ferrai dinosoaur (sp)
Getting water in a running diesel is probably 10 times more dangerous than a petrol.
diesels are no more inpervious than a petrol, unless sutiably modified like the sorkel i have coming for my landrover to do this.......................

I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but Chip's right! lol. Just enjoy it for what it, all you haters, you'll still watch it next week. Hoiw anyone can say it wasn't enjoyable amazes me, that was TV gold, whether it's got alledged factual errors or not.
Yeh, I suppose as Porkie said maybe I get caught up in the whole excitement of everything, and when you see it in the studio with all the guests knowing how much effort you've put into the planning etc (trust me, the Shopping centre race took a lot of planning, my second best Risk Assessment to date, Which was my best Risk Assessment? ask the Redline guys as they recieved it last week, god it's good!) it does seem epic, but this is a predominantly Car website, where you guys want to see cars, www.finalgear.com , a TG fansite adored the episode.
People need to stop hating and just enjoy it for what it is, a very entertaining car based show that you know you'll watch again next week. I often read stuff on here, and as you guys know I keep things to myself on what's coming up on the show etc, but you'd be surprised at how much is real and genuine when all you read about is it being fake, it's far from that and the show being the way it is it's often good to show when things go wrong.
Don't forget to watch next sunday, you know you will! Oh, and did you like my "Decadent and capitalist Land Rover"?

mmm ive had my rs1800 in water that deep before but only for a few seconds at high revs and that was with a cone filter
Water was only at the bonnet level for about 5 secs so depending on airbox placement he MAY have got away with it. As for exhaust issues as long as you have engine revving tits off i dont see the problem?? I used to take my RS1800 through deep puddles and fords occasionally for a laugh and found with water covering the exhaust the revs died unless you floored it and held it floored but it wont die unless you let the revs fall
a full bore of water into the airbox would be terminal though for the reasons mentioned by others
Interestingly my RS needed loads of floor welding come MoT time and i founf that out cos water used to come in in deep puddles
Wether it was done properly or rigged/fake on top gear we wont know unless some insiders find out. I can imagine them having spare cars just in case.
