has it been sitting for long? try first of all to give the glow plugs a couple of heats, turn the ignition on wait for the glow plug light to go out then listen for a click, (relay clicking) do that a couple of times and then try and start it, if not give it a sniff of easy start, if none of them work, then as was said above, but their easy quick way's

if the glow plugs are shagged and they can just chuck their hand in, a quick tow up the road on a rope can get it running easy, i used to use a can of bradex on trannysand escort diesel vans as it was cheeper than a new hd battery, the 1.8 d's like a good battery when its freezing, bradex with its aromatic potion of lethal gases could start anything imo
