Default Photography people. Looking for a telephoto lens

Looking for a new lens for my d40

At the moment i'm leaning towards the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm

Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm

But i've just found the following lenses

Tamron 70-300mm

and

Sigma 70-300mm

First off, i assume both those lenses will still be able to be used in auto focus mode with my d40?
Is the nikon lens worth the extra money?

Yes it is a VR lens = more keepers...

thats why it is more expensive....

if you can afford to spend the £320 get it

Yea, i've got the money ready to spend, just wanted to make sure it was worth the extra. I'll be looking to get a new tripod and head next, if i get the Nikon lens, then i will have to wait for next month for them, if i get any of the cheaper lenses then i can get it sooner.

Buy the best you can affaord - it will return its value to you with the pictures you take with it

I wanted something a bit special so treated my camera to a Canon EF 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens - absolutely amazing lens, hefty price in the UK mind, got it for less than half the UK price by ordering from the states - saved over £700 that way - Buy it right first time

No point in uploading pics I have taken as the reduction in size kills the quality But rest assured that it is a superb lens

DaveZS - Yes they will all auto focus on your D40, as they're all AF-S lenses. The VR range of lenses are quite well thought of from what ive read in the past, plus as neal says you have the added bonus of the VR meaning you will probably get more keepers than with a lens that doesnt have this feature.
