my best mate wen on his honeymoon there
and fookin hated it - said the highlight of their honeymoon was watching Pimp MY Ride on TV
Apparently its preety dodgy outside of the resort with loadsa locals following you and begging for money, etc.
U can get the cigars on the black market too and pretty cheap and come all sealed, etc.
Also dont even think about smoking any green there as :
1) U cant get it out there
2) you will get jailed and fooked if you are caught with it.
Its even worse than cocaine out there
Also you can getaway with killing your Mrs out there but will get fooked if you kill your mate

I have been there twice, I suggest getting advice from your tour guide as muggings in broad daylight by a dozen plus children are not that uncommon if you stray out of the tourist areas. Paddys advice about basic school supplies is spot on as its the absolute basic things that are most needed. Be careful when buying cigars and dont buy a large quantity in one go as you are liable to get half a dozen quality ones and then 20 dog turds wrapped in a leaf (I am not kidding!). Also only use tourguides that are arranged by the resort/hotel and never take up an offer from any of the many "guides" touting their services on the street. Its a wonderful place with some great sights but you have to be careful as regards the beggers who will crowd round you and then try and rob you.
Christ I hope I have not put you off going as the majority of people there are great but the poverty is some of the worst I have seen.
Cam
Oh yes, nearly forgot, Any triband mobile will work no problem.

Hey phil, I went to cuba the year before last! It's great! what hotel you staying in? are you in Varadero or Havana?
There are stacks of outlets for cigars but if you get over a certain amount I think or is it certain types you need to get a certificate off of the shop or they can confiscate them at customs....the hotels have shops that sell them legit, well most do and there are tours available to go see them being made,(the virgins whose thighs they are supposed to rolled on are shall we say it is obvious why they could be virgins! leg hair cigar anyone?).
I will stick a leaflet thing in yer locker that they give you about buying cigars.
As for tips and stuff to take......The people there are quite poor but also quite proud, the lady who took care of our room was fantastic, we left her a $5 every 3/4 days which seems like very little but to them is a lot....we also left all our washing stuff and I took a load of bars of soap cos it is hard for them to get that kind of thing, it is a real luxury to them......oh and pens too for the kids for school. Whe we were leaving she gave us an enourmous bag of sweets that her husband makes in a factory and apologised she had nothing else, poor people.
Beware of people trying to buy/trade your 'branded' stuff.......like trainers, tracksuit tops/bottoms and bloody baseball caps! I was hounded constantly to trade souveniers for my clothes, if I'd have taken them up on their offers I'd have come home naked from ever trip (NOT a nice thought I know!). and DO NOT take trainers to the beach, our hotel had security with telescopes on the roof but they were still constantly chasing locals off the beaches, they'd sneak in via the sea!
