Go to your local DVLA office with all the relevent paperwork and put it on retention. The process can take up to 6 weeks but in my experience its been about a fortnight.

You have to put your current number plate on Retention. This will cost you Ł105. Any post office or local DVLA will have the necessary forms. But the car you are taking the number plate off MUST have in date Tax and an in date MoT. And you will need copies of both when you submit the form for rentention. Most importantly you will need the serial numbers off your tax disc.

By LAW the DVLA HAVE to complete the retention process within a period of ten days at the most. But if they arent that busy it can be done as quickly as 24 hours.

No you need to keep the V5 document!!! as they will need to change the details on this. theoretically i guess you can sell the car, but you still need to keep all the documentation.

I had the same dilemma when I sold my last EsCos. I had an expensive plate (COS5Y) that wasn't included in the sale price. I put the plated on retention and sold the car with COS5Y still on it and the new owner returned the plate to me once the replacement reg was issued.
