Default New L6/L8/P8 Pectel Monitor Software Development

Hello All,

Following on from this thread.... https://passionford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=266269

I will start the story again for those who dont know...

I was going through some old stuff from my old product developments and came across a file I had forgotten about.
A whole load of information regarding weber ecus and in particular pectel versions of those ecu's I have researched in great detail.
This seemed a great waste as I spent alot of time gaining the information and it is just wasted doing nothing.
I found my self with some free time in the evenings and have knocked up this program.
Also, I thought it would be good to develop this openly as to allow people to suggest changes/features as everyone has different needs.

Here is a qucik screen shot so far...

You may down load a demo version here..... http://www.s8ecu.co.uk/FPM_DEMO_211108.zip
(This is a zip file, best create a new folder yourself and run it from this)

Its basically a PC pectel monitor but this program is so much more than that.
This can be used as a diagnostic tool, Data logger, digital dash board, alarm monitor etc...
Also, will have some live mapping features above and beyond what is possible with the standrad pectel type monitor. (Subject for another day)
Also, I intend to add extra intefaces to allow other sensors such as EGT, Speedo etc...

The user can customise the screens exactly as wanted and save the layout to one of 10 storage settings for easy recall.

Each display item can...
1) Be resized by dragging the corners.
2) Be moved by dragging the window title.
3) Turned on or off by selecting them from the displays menu.
4) Change colours by right clicking any item.
5) Enable/disable background image blending (transparancy)
6) Allows a user image to be used as the background
(Put your own JPEG (.jpg) image called BACKGROUND in the same folder)

The scope item cannot be changed much at present as that is what I am working on.

I intend to add other types of graphic functions an displays but the aim first is to get it as a working entity on a car and add new displays and wanted features due to popular demand...lol

Also, I will add other vehicle communications to it such as OBD2 etc...

The program above is a demo program and will not communicate with a car as I have disabled that for now.
When you select the ONLINE fuction, it will simulate some data to show you how it will look when a car is actually connected.
This data simulation is far from perfect but you will get the idea of how it works.

If you try it out and find any bugs or have suggestions for features or modifications the please feel free to comment on this thread.
Please do not email or PM me about this software.

I intend to update this thread every few days for those interested.

When its in a reasonable working state, those who have contributed here may have a copy protected limited version although you will have to make your own interface cable.
I may ask one of our resident loom makers to supply these at a reasonable cost for these people.

I have no idea or plans on how the final software will be published at this point in time but should it ever be comercially available, I will only do this via offical PF traders otherwise, it will be FOC.

*** THE SMALL PRINT ****
I will say now, this is NOT a for sale advert.
I am developing this software at this point purely as something to do.
You may down load it free of charge.
I offer no waranty/guarantee or timescales for completion.
You may down load it at your own risk although I have fully virus checked it.

Enjoy

Default Software

Looks like a great bit of work, would be nice to have a working version to try, just putting a fresh engine back in the car as we speak.

A good reason to stick with my P8

Well done.

Simon,
If you make any of the digi windows really big, the readout flickers. Apart from that really good mate. As jimbo asked above, will this connect via the diagnostic port connection? Any ecu with a pectel board?

Plus is this going to work with your ecu? Can you pm me about that please mate.

Could it have a bluetooth interface / conection, that way it could possibly be viewed on say a Nokia E90 etc.

Just a thought

Jimbo,

It will do ALL the pectel monitor does including the mapping version and much more.
It connects via the serial port on the ecu using only 3 wires.

So yes it will work on all pectel boards (if enabled for monitor) and others.
Stu @ MSD can add the pectel monitor data stream to ANY chip with or without a pectel board

Its reads all incoming sensors and fault codes (and much more)
It will data log to the limit of the hardrive.
Plus you can set your own warning limits and alarms like the SECS monitor.
The mapping facility will allow full live mapping just like a modern ecu except its only active while the PC is connected as the L6/L8/P8 doesnt have rewriteable memory but you will end up with a hex file to burn an eprom.

So you can use it as a diagnostic tool and/or digi dash display if you have an old laptop to butcher up for the car.

See above

I hope to have a JAVA version of the program as my next project but will need some kind of interface that will cost money...LOL

Kev,
At the moment, the demo version updates the windows too often so will cause flickering on large fonts on slower computers..
The ecu only updates about 5 to 10 times per second normally.

Yes it will work on S8 but I want the pectel version working first as I have a mate who is fitting a PC into his car as we speak an he has an L8.

Drop me a PM if you need info to talk about your car

It connects to pins 8 and 27 which are the diagnostic socket connections.
If these pins have been used for other purposes (E.G 8 injectors on some) the internal connections can still be used but obviously will be harder to get at.

I think MSD's LC/ALS use pins 13 and 14 from memory but I could be wrong. ????

There is a 3 pin diagnostic socket on the factory looms near the ecu main plug.
(Its under the bonnet between the batterry and strut top on an escos)

Pins 8, 27 and an ecu earth.

It uses RS232 but you can get USB to RS232 interfaces very cheaply for about £10 from most computer shops.

J1mbo,

I have no idea what the future of this holds as its just something I wanted to do for fun.
I cant really give a price I think it could be worth as that may break trader rules.

I will let a few tuners/traders have a play first with the full version for some proper feedback
(then wait for the wads of cash to be waved under under my nose...LOL )

I have an L8 and P8 ecu on my engine simulator box as well as an L8 software ecu emmulator.
Also, have a couple of local friends with cossies who have been helping me

LOL, its already working as it is for L8 and P8.

Is your car enabled for data stream ?

Just need to work out how I am going to protect my work for now while giving out working samples for evaluation.
Only takes 1 person to take advantage and I lose control of it !

Most secure protection systems cost money as they use hardware plug in keys or software librarys you have to suscrribe to etc.

May need to spend a time and invent my own security on it !!

the only thing i could notice was that you can't resize the scope? my screen is 800x600 and you struggle to get everything on one screen and still be able to read everything.

I wouldnt know as I have never tried any other IAW stuff myself apart from the original pectel monitor unit.
All this work is my own based on my own experience and designs.

I will say, from my investigations, I have discovered much more of the capabilities of the standard data stream than is used on anything I have seen.

For example, I am able to read the whole contents of the memory including the chip which leads to many new possible functions.
Also, it is possible to alter memory in the ecu ram

I am currently working on the scope functions and you will be able to resize it on the next update.

I wil also be adding default layout functions for different screen sizes.

You can get small single board solid state PC's with screens for about £300.
I have some links on my other computer to these products and will post some up soon.
I have also seen some PCs designed for in car use but they are not cheap !

Having said all that, there are so many cheap second hand lap tops out there as you dont need anything too special to run the software.

I beleive Chip put an old laptop in his boot and used a video head unit as a remote display.
