Just having a poke around the Auto Trader and came across a few Renault Laguna Estates that i liked...

Anyone had one.....if so, what they like

 

don't know a lot about them apart from the 120hp model likes a turbo!

 

i heard they like turbos............

 

I've got a 53 plate hatchback, engines been fine but just had the rear axle bushes done at 73k. The gearboxes can be a problem i'm told so check 2nd and 3rd gear if you test drive any.

 

A good mate of mines a trader, and he went through a spell of selling these about 2 years ago. Quite nice to drive, very comfy, Dci engines are quiet and powerful, its just the odd things which caused him problems, Card keys were troublesome, Xenon light units were a right PITA and expensive to replace, rear brakes commonly gave problems, and rear wheel bearings are a whole hill of money (come with the stub axle from memory)

Ive driven a fair few and quite like them, not an unpleasant car to look at either.

 

I must admit...i think they are very nice to look at......I am looking at a 2001 model.

Has FSH, 70k on it........

 

Oh yeah forgot to say one of my card keys has lost its memory, but other than that its good on diesel and drives fine (for a french car.)

 

Why a french car? get something reliable and built well

 

I had one, was the older shape on a W reg but had the dci engine was badge'd up as a sport in a matalic green colour with nice alloys. Good comfy motor that went alright too. Never had any real issue with it. My brothers got it now and it's above 100k and still going strong. I liked it and would have another.

 

I am getting mixed views on them...........after doing some research.

People are saying about the electrics ect....

I have a 52 plate estate, for me it is a very good car and with prices as they are represents a bloody good bargain! I have moved things like 3 piece suites around, strapped enough wood to rebuild a flat roof to the roof rails, fitted an entire demolished flat roof in the back.. I even took it to the south of France loaded up with 2 bikes, snowboards, huge tent and all camping equipment all in the boot! (no need for a roof rack or bike carrier!). It also fitted 3 blokes and 3 bikes all inside the car to go to Wales!

It's comfy, full loaded with climate control, cruise control, speed limiter, parking sensors, auto dipping mirrors, auto wipers, tyre pressure monitors, Xenons, 6 speed box etc. I get 50mpg on a long run and low 40mpg on my daily run (6 miles of country lanes)

I've done about 20k in mine, the car is now on 100k and have done the following (myself):

Rear suspension bushes (common fault, was getting a knocking over bumps, bushes turned out to be shot! got the bushes off eBay and also a tool to fit them. Easy DIY job)

Boost pressure sensor - Got an injection system fault warning on the dash when cruising on the motorway and car goes into limp home mode. Is fine for a few minutes after restarting then re-occurred. Took a gamble with the sensor at £30ish and it paid off!

Stripped and dried xenon ballast - One light stopped working after I left it in an airport car park whilst going snowboarding. Took the light unit apart and dried it out and it worked again. (new parts were looking at almost £300 from Renault)

Rear discs, pads and wheel bearings - one rear calliper started sticking from the handbrake and ate the pad and disc. Discs and bearings are all one piece so more expensive than regular discs but reasonable on eBay.

Track rod ends - one was very worn

Other issues:
Common fault - headlight washers stay sticking up if you wash the screen with the lights on. One of the tyre valves was leaking so had to get a new value unit from Renault (includes the pressure sensor - only around £20) but its about £80 to had it coded into the ECU so until I do that I have a warning on my dash constantly.

The turbo issue is down to the intercooler and piping, on the early versions they split, overspeeding the turbo and making them eat the bearings. There is a revised intercooler with a strap (early versions bow across the top and bottom) and metal piping (I'm not 100% on which piping was revised)

The 17" Silverstone alloys are supposed to be quite weak. I have them on mine and have no problems but apparently they buckle easily on pot holes.

I guess if you get one that has been looked after then you wont go wrong......ish.

stay well away mate turbos go,fuel pumps go,injectors go,gearboxes,and intercooler if you look on ebay ect there is loads spares or repairs.A mate who is a mechanic has done load of turbos pumps ect on them,also key cards go off and winder motor always go

 

Power wise - I think they are 120bhp... It's certainly not fast Its not too slow though by any means for overtaking and stuff

 

Why not gat a Fabia vRS to go with the Octavia

My son bought a Megane 1.9 dci, 6 speed Estate 05, 44000miles engine blown. £2000.

Got another engine, loads around.

Then started finding the horror stories about them.

03 DCI Laguna, Megane, Espace, keep away, turbo oil feed pipe blocks, turbo goes and takes the engine with it.
Renault have a quiet deal going if you know about it to fit new engines under extended warrant

04 on oil feed modified but some engines carried over to later years.

Look on here, 40 pages just about Renault DCI;

Go back up into Ownership problems and look through Laguna, there my be some info there as well.

New clutch £160, slave cylinder inc release bearing £80, master £65 Dual mass flywheel £250 (or someone on ebay £250 flywheel and clutch, no slave though)

Steer clear mate, the turbo is a weak link and if it goes it picks up and kills the engine, we had one in the other week, it ended up being an un econimical repair, we spoke to a Diesel specialist local to us and he says he has them in on a regular basis all with the same thing and he's only ever repaired one... All the rest have been broken for spares.

 

2 lads at my work got them and there never on road always something wrong id stay away from them everthing goes wrong with them

 

As said on the phone- my mates ended up in a ditch..... with roof damage.

But then he is stupid and replaced it with a megane scenic- which has subsequently just been replaced with a Silver VRS like yours.

 

Think mine has had everything either done or gone wrong on this thread so far

Its been sat for 12 months now and not moved once and I dont really miss it.

Turbo and intercooler were replaced FOC at 4 years old under Renaults Yellow OTS scheme, done the rear beam bushes myself twice, sunroof has packed in working, the n/s front window packed in working, done the xenon headlight bulbs, had a nightmare with the in built Sat Nav never switching off and draining the battery etc etc

I remember going through all this with Phil and he still bought that one

But at 70k make sure its belts have been done and its had proper regular oil changes using decent stuff.

Im on my second set of wheels as I tend to go off roading in forrest tracks etc and I hate the low ish profile tyres they put on them.

But at the end of the day its a cheap run around

personally i think there great value for money, clutches are dear we have got two put a clutch in our 2001 one recently cost us 450 trade for the kit!!

you do get little grimbles like tyre pressue sensors lighting up but the system can be deactivated, yes turbos go on them every 100k.
our 02 plate one we had to put rear subframe bushes the other week, only couple hrs and £30 though so not end world

both ours have sat nav leather nice alloys all electrics, 6 speed go well too, but sit at 70 in sixth superb mpg, but the main reason is they rate 5 stars on the crash tests and are full of airbags, v v v safe cars, people allways forget these things when buying cars, my kids go in our cars i want them to be as safe as poss

 

Wouldnt go for chips in one let alone do anything else with one

fucking rubbish, don't bother!

everything is expensive. aside from everything above, rear shocks, done a few of them, intercoolers, pipework, window regulators, those wank climate control switches that fuck up just don't bother. i'd rather take my chances with a £100 escort estate from ebay and take up a welding course!
