Default Escort 1.6 diesel van starting help

As above i have a 16d van X reg 60k on the clock my mate has been using it & ran it out of fuel scince then its never started properly all the time its done about 200 miles scince sometimes it starts fine but most times you need to tow it.The system has been blead but its like its drewing air when its been sitting.
Whats common for going wrong on these?
It was fine for me for months & months started every half turn

Carlo I would also check that the fuel filter / primer unit has not split the diaphram as this will cause intake of air and crap starting specially as its run out of fuel and have had to prime fuel up if its the other type of fuel filter with 10mm bleed bolt on top disregard the above statement and like already stated try filter change.

Regards Doug .

doddle to change, filter heads only held on by 2 13mm nuts, than strip it down on a bench, take 5-10 mins

right first things first.

is it a 1.6 escort van ?? i have had 1.6 escort vans and they were mk3's and iirc some mk4's although don't hold me to that.
i usually find with old diesel ezzies that if they won't go its usually the glow plugs or the rings are fucked, i have seen them run perfect yet take the oil cap off and they breathe like theres no compression left.
the glow plugs can work ok ish 1 minute and then never work again, diesel pumps are very good on the old escorts, i found they drip resulting in a mot fail before they chuck there hand in properly
