Default where can i go with my m3 to learn how to drive/hang it properly?

i have had the e46 m3 now for a few months and im growing more and more confident in it as you do but im still a complete novice when it comes to rear wheel drive and would like to learn how to control/slide/drift it to a decent standard,

so where can i go to try this safely that is an organised event/place etc, i know there are drift what you brung days but i am such a novice i would just be spinning it round uselessly for god knows how long before i even started to get to grips with it so dont want to look like too much of a twat in front of very skilled drivers.

and no i dont want to find empty mc donalds car parks although i admit to the odd doghnut in big empty spaces on industrial sites etc once or twice lol

cheers
marc

Don't forget your camera. Be warned what feels sideways as fook inside the car often looks like barely more than a wiggle from outside the car

they do drift days at oulton park on the tarmac rally track they have there, apparentley the tarmac has lots more small stones added in it when its mixed which makes it very slippy and hardly wears your tyres at all, a good freind of mine has been twice in his e36 m3 and loved it, he said its a very relaxed atmosphere and no one minds if you spin out, he was spinning it often! think most people there are trying to learn what there cars can do in a safe environment from seeing his videos so would probably be a good place to start, hope that helps mate.

Marc, I always found waterside farm roundabout on Canvey was a good place to learn back in the day!

Once you've mastered that, you can then move onto something more challenging like Saddlers Farm.......

Saddlers Farm would look like a coroegraphed ballet display
Dont think youd make it round a full circuit tho with out some tool cutting you up.

Ive had a 4 wheel drift in my landrover with a ton of sand in the back a bit keen in 3rd gear round there before when i hit some oil or diesel

how funny not been sideways round them roundabouts for ages ones out near burnham are better less traffic

but think the novice drift days the better plave to practice

have looked out the side window a few times in the M3 now, fucking great fun and gets the heart rate going. Try and find a disused airfield that you can use for a hour or so, practic on there mate. Just make sure you have shit tyres on as you will go through them like fuck!

I find it has taken me quite a while to get comfortable with the back end wiggling about in my m3. I think it responds well, being front engined and pretty close to 50:50 weight balance, however, it also feels like it could stick you off the road if you decided to take any liberties, so think it would be a good idea to learn on somewhere like a drift prepped runway.

good luck

RW

mine nearly caught me out once, and that was a wet drain. Got to be really careful mate, when they go, you can garantee your not going slow when it goes.

I also find that if you have the radio on, you cant actually tell that its spinning. What M3 do you have mate? e36? evo? non evo? e30 or e46?

marc, where do you live mate?

the DWYB days at pod are pretty good i belive.

deffo need somewhere open to get the hang of it. also at a dwyb day there will be plenty of people to speak to about technique etc.

i found going to a few helped no end, i could drift our sierra shitter pretty well in 2nd gear, but on the road, you will be in at least 3rd gear, so faster speeds, and hit things harder when it goes wrong lol

imo id go to a few to get the basics of how to control the car, its not just a full foot of throttle and expect the car to go sideways, there is a bit more to it than that.

thing is tho, on the road, with most cars, if the shit hits the fan, you've hit a tree before you have even had time to piss your pants as there just isnt the space for giving it the big one at the speeds involved.

barring some big roundabouts, on the road as i found, you run out of talent and space a lot faster than if you were in a controlled enviroment lol
