Another example - your trailer is gross weight 3500 your car is 1750 but the trailer weighs 1000kg could strap a feather on the trailer and still be classed as over weight.

I can't find figures for vans but I think a Ford is 2800 don't quote me on that though (please) BUT a Iveco daily is 3500
couldnt fined anything that says you cannot tow an empty trailer that empty is under your max tow weight , but its loaded cap is over (obv its illegal if you tow it loaded) where did you find that out ?

it weighs in at around 1600 kgs "empty" so i think we were on shakey ground when we were 4 up and towing jims/pauls/jb's m3 back from martoon's place

to solve all the problems, why not just go to a reputable towing company and ask what's what and for them to measure stuff up?

it's only going to cost you £7 at the council weighbridge to find out how much the car weighs with fluids levels at max and a driver

Ifor Williams, they made my trailer.

I phoned them to ask this exact question because I have a Granada Scorpio that I was going to use and the Legal person there explained the rules to me.

I said what can I tow the trailer I have bought with and she said gave examples of - Range Rover/Disco/Iveco daily.

I don't understand the in's and outs of it and also think its bollocks really with the but with VOSA around I don't need the agravation.

I haven't got it in writing but its black and white really. Tow weight of car=gross weight of trailer. whoever stops you will not know the weight of the car on trailer but the plate says the max weights.

I think a good example might be - a 7.5 tn is rated fully loaded but even empty could not go over a 3.5tn bridge.

every site i find with info seems to be out of date, or to confusing for my small brain.

my main thing to tow is going to be the cossie on a trailer - but im hearing so many people stating that i need to use a vehicle with twice the weight of what im going to be towing - which equates to a vehicle best part of 3 ton.

but then on the road you see plenty of vectra's and mondeo's still towing cars around on trailers and not being pulled over.

ive got myself a Discovery, but its not really my thing and its far to juicy - but i dont want to trade her in and get a normal familly saloon and then get told off by Mr plod on my first outing.

any true insights to this please guys!?!?
Hi Kelv

dont suppose you want an L200 do you, fancy a bit of off roading again in a disco.
