does look bad, but I know amac engineering who built my engine are experts in rebuilding alloy heads, I have seen some of there work when damage has been similar to this and you would never know! Cost may be a factor tho, cossie heads are still around at the mo just., and im sure the one I saw with damage like this was a bda head or something equelly valuable where repair was the cheapest option.

you would be suprised, i reckon it may go,

but you would have to ask a repairer tbh, as its them that have to do it, not us!

A bloke called Ken from Teeside has had similar recently where all 4 valves have had the heads snapped off and mashed into the piston and head and he is going to get it repaired.

It happened on his 6R4 at over 9k rpm

For the price of what it costs to fix you will probably be better getting a new one anyway

Its not just the head you've got to worry about there, if you turn the block over and put no4 to the bottom i bet the bore is trashed.

I'm not an expert but I think you need a new head, piston, 4x valves and most likely a block if the cylinder bore's been scored as much as the head and piston have been mashed! What was it doing when it went?

the head looks lke it's toast mate

i'd be more worried about the bore to see if it's survived, if not, it might be worth getting hold of a decent engine as opposed to forking out for new bits and bobs depending on what you get quoted

everything can be repaired, but im sure the amount of hours needed to get it back would outstripe the cost of a second hand one

SPAM lol

New head time.

I believe that one may just manage to (once its ported and polished again) become an excellent doorstop

Ive an old head here with similar damage, a lot of the ali mush you see in the bowl is actually from the piston, once thats removed the head is quite resiliant to damage.

You have nothing to lose by clearing that away and look at the actual damage, but even if it does clean up, the ali around the valve seats may by compromised as discussed elsewhere, and is it worth the risk of re-use only for it to drop a valve seat.

Biggest problem will be finding a decent used head as most out there also need money spending on them and usually only have one more go left in them before they are scrap as well

Yes I can repair that for you, it will require full welding of the chamber, 4 new seats fitted, chamber remachined back to shape, new valve guides, seats re-cut and head re-machined. Cost from myself will be around £300, so given the thin state of the head, I'd advise a good 2nd hand one.

you can tell if you look at how much flat surface there is where the Water Temp sensor is located (the bracket has been removed when the head has been skimmed previously) as in top right of this picture, you can clearly see that it been skimmed very flat and i'd say if you measured that head it will be well below 138.20mm or even lower

getting another head is not an issue - i have a wonderful brother who takes care of that sort of thing

don't know what the cylinder is liked, i haven't turned it over yet

i'm thinking of ditching the YB and putting in a n/a duratec (or similar - has anyone done an S2000 conversion?) and stripping it for a track car

i'll measure it up at some point and see.

don't know the cause of failure, would be interesting to hear some opinions and experiences. the car was cruising along at 70mph on the motorway in 5th, so not under load or anything. inside of exhaust manifold elbow is quite white and the spark plug for no. 4 had the nipple missing.

in theory yes just not as flat as that though a brand new head has no flat area and the outta rough casting can still be seen a head at 138.70mm will have a very small flat area around maybe 2-2.5mm by the looks of that head its 5-6mm at very least, you can also see the same effect around the exhaust manifold where it joins the head

i am not saying hat this is what caused this failure, but can any precautions be taking to ensure that the valve seat area does not fall out as happened in jtechs head
