Default Boost fluctuating - cause?

ok its an MR2 turbo that runs an HKS EVC III boost controller.

it seems to have this annoying habit of often not HOLDING the set boost correctly.

it i set the EVC to 10psi, most of the time it will spike at 12ish (offset set to 100%) drop to 10 and hold 10 perfect all the way.

otehr times it'll go between 9 and 11 like once a second and you can hear the thing going "whooshwhooshwhoosh". seems most noticeable in the higher gears.

also it seems to overboost too much in 5th when under load. if i set the OFSET to 75% (what pon had it on) it'll hit the overboost every time in 5th. if i drop it to 100% it will do it some of the time.

i've tried setting it to 115% for the time being, but that makes it less punchy in the lower gears as it doesnt come in and spike as hard.

any thoughts lads? i was gonna get it set up by MSD yesterday but i have had to postpone till the 31st

oh, and one more, the engine management light keeps coming on (goes off after ignition cycle) but fault code reader shows no stored faults! grrr. dont thikn the fault is overboost related tho as its come on when cruising as well as when givign it beans

Can't you set boost manually(evc bypassed) to rule out the controller/controller settings?

id rather not remove the boost controller and replace it for testing if it is orme likely to be another fault.

might have to do that tho

Mine does the same mate.

Have you got a fuel cut defender on yours?

Im still running the fuel cut at 1 bar on mine, got it on a bleed valve set to 0.9 bar, and i cant spank it in 5th otherwise it boosts to 1.1 bar and the fuel cut defender kicks in.
Perfectly fine giving it death in 1,2,3 and 4th gear just 5th it has a paddy.

And i also get the ecu light come on when crusing in 4th or 5th, no fault codes present either.

Sell the EBC and spend 17 quid on a bleed 'on' valve.

Does pretty much the same thing, without all the fucking bleeping and flashing bullshit. And instead of paying 400 quid, you pay 20... How many times have you adjusted the boost in the car? You don't.... You run max possible boost 100% of the time Just like everyone else....

ok, more symptoms

the boost will creep in 5th gear as you pile the revs on. with the boost controller OFF it notmaly boosts to 6psi, but was about 8-9psi as 5krpm so deffo creeping. possibly worn actuator?

also on part throttle the turbo will be spinning up (can hear it hissing) but no boost getting to the engine (map). iw ehen cruising on mototrway. when it does this it will make the engine management light come on. if you apply a tiny bit more throttle it will eventually shoot from making no boost to full boost, theres no inbetween.

i'm thinking possbily leaking dumpvalve? (std recirc)? presumably a normal everyday boostleak wouldnt fix itself when you apply a bit more throttle?

there's a definite whistle noise there now that wasnt before tho

Possible boost leak, check all hoses and vacuum pipes. Also worth check the manifold/turbo etc for cracks

ok, had the ofset set to 70% not 150% like i thought on 100% it doesnt hit overboost, so thats that sorted.

got to work out this part throttle boost problem hoping dumpvalve
