Excellent reading here, very topical as I have the head off my car at the minute.

What are people's opinions of this? Somewhere between Stu's newie and the one he was using as a bad example:

I hope it's good to go again, but it looks a bit on the thin side!!

Neil.

having a yb built at the moment and i asked the engineer about headthickness and the 138.6 rule of thumb, he did say that not only can it become an issue for the valve seats etc plus the obvious raise in cr, but if it gets too low , the cambelt tensioner can become useless in its job as it gets closer n closer to the bottom pulley, makin it an issue with correct belt tension.
correct me if im wrong pls.
Very good thread guys ive read every word!!

You'd have bigger issues than not being able to get the belt tight IMO - the valves would be on the pistons at TDC!

Ditto for what Richard says about the valves being proud of the lower face of the head.

i sent a certain company a 139mm head,i asked them to check my head was okay, they said yes was very good, agreed to pay £3800 (sold my car)to cnc, tape, long dic valves, machined for solid lifters and cam shafts all put together...........................i got back a 137mm head that was not mine, sprayed silver even that was flaking........
was then told nothing wrong with that head.
er 1 cam cap was 0.001 out on your head and no warranty as it is for race purpose only.............................have a nice day!

this is a good thread- but i didnt hear if the heads 137+ work? are the valve seats recessed and valve stem ground?
are maybe the bucket is ground?
shorter pistons?
can anyone answer this?
my head is measuring 138.3 and its warped so i need to thro it up on the mill and skim it - am i wasting my time?

is the head any good for n/a use at minimum height?-seeing as its gotta get larger valve seats??????????????????????????

welding heads thicker=
you couldnt weld the cyl head either to build up the thickness. firstly try get the correct material rods that match the head- sec there is hugh heat involved in alloy welding so damage is gonna happen.third it would take you an untold amount of hours weldind, milling and machining everything to get right- buy a new one

You'll find that's in the mid 137's as it looks identical to mine which is running 420+
Allthough helpfull I find most of this a load of waffle/scare tatics as how many times have you read that 'new un-skimmed' heads measure 138.6?
When infact they are 138.98 (I think)
IMO (which doesn't count even though logical) as long as the skimming hasn't affected the valve seat ie skimmed into it how can it be a problem?
I recently had my head skimmed and measured at 137.5 and have been told that I will get at least 1 more light skim out of it in the future.
However it does make piston to valve clearances an issue and also throws the TDC markings out on the cam pulleys.
