it's what happens when you buy a new car it looses 17.5% as soon as you drive it off the forecourt!

Thats thats about 3k on a focus st (depending on spec etc) straight away, then there's all this credit crunch shit so people won't be buyin cars, which means they'll try n make as much from you as they can

Why do you wanna trade it in for the same car anyway?

Is it a better spec or summat?

Trade will never give you a decent price, they need to make a profit on the car when they sell it on.

I would sell up either now, or next feb/march time on a private sale, just what that the tax band don't put punters off - what is it on the ST

robbing c**ts !!
And you can bet they would have it for sale for another 4 grand more two weeks later.
I hate it when people blatantly try and rip you off. I had a Fiesta Zetec S, 02 plate, 49,000 miles and immaculate, i got offered 1250 !! i just laughed and walked out, i was so shocked at the nerve of them !

As above, you'll lose the 17.5% VAT and the dealer margin. I lost £12k on my last X5 <----- those are real tears

Thing is your forgetting that when you trade a car in, especially an older one like a ZS, they will go out to auction so get a fraction of the price they would get on the street.

Plus they have to get them to the auction and deal with the paper work etc so no, they aren't going to give you much.

If it is a newer car, that they may sell, they have to sort out any little jobs on it, then warranty it, then wait for it to sell, advertising, etc. It's a business, they are in it to make money and I bet they don't make that much out of it when everything is takien into consideration.

On the other hand you get the ease of dropping it off and stepping into you new car, no advertising, or wasted saturdays with tyre kickers etc.

I worked at British Car Auctions in derby, and was expecting cars to go thru really cheap, but even on a friday when some rite shitters went thru, not one sold for any less than 500.

them sort of cars are like st mondeos, they go down in price big time, maybe because they are a nice car thats sportier than other fastish fords they may do better.
i saw a y reg st200 at a ford sale do 850 quid and me thinking it was a shitter went to see the miles and it had done 51k, how on earth can you go wrong with a v6 st200 on a yreg for 850 rips direct from Ford

Price they've offered in p/x seems right tbh - dealers always offer the lowest book price accounting for their margin if the car is to be marketed & re-sold & based on current financial situation they will offer cheap money for your car - plus dealer will probably only put car up on their forecourt around £15k to try & sell it on quickly - local Ford dealers to me have drastically chopped prices of 07/08 spec cars to try & shift them

@ Alexno1dj - most dealers wont touch a car like yours unfortunately as p/x as it will never go on their forecourt for resale - will end up being sold cheap via trade - even small garage/traders will offer low book price on them as they have an even narrower margin for any profit

do not forget when working out how much profit you think a ford main agent makes on a focus st that they have a word called overheads to consider, the car they may take in px may be a shitter that they may lose money on etc, lights rates, wages etc etc, i have worked for a car dealer who owned a main dealers who sold 1 car that was a swapper anyway out of a million quids worth of stock, just his adverts were about 5 grand a month in the various local papers

Depends if you view your car as an investment, or as something you buy and use until it's dead I suppose. I gave up trying to get any kind of money back on new cars ages ago.....

As for the 850 quid ST200, thats a billy bargain!!

Anyone know how the prices are doing for the latest mondeos, the 2.5T estate? My next daily car I think!

The Focus RS's are doing better pricewise because they were built in limited numbers, despite what alot of people say the RS is better value than the ST now

No sympathy at all for you, you should have known it would depreciate lke that!

I think people who buy new cars either have more money than sence or no sence and no money.

Just think of all the rich mofo's who bought a brand new BMW M6 when it came out 3 years ago - nearly £90k for that car, and the price today - £25-£35k if you're lucky!!!

I feel sorry for folk who bought 'performance' cars before the new tax laws came in.
The government effectively wrote off your motors when they changed the rules.

Folk who've bought them after this date knew what they were getting into so they should have known better.
I should imagine the market for new 'performance' cars is dwindling at the moment, with the cost of fuel and tax to worry about. I may be wrong but I can't see them being attractive investments at the moment.

Balls, if you can afford a performance motor say (focus RS) over a standard one (1.8 zetec or whatever) then, i dont think an extra £200 over the course of a year is a big deal.

yes its not right and not fair and totally wrong of the government, but if you cant afford the extra £17ish tax per month you probably shouldnt have bought the car in the 1st place.

A valid point!! And, with the way things are going fuel prices are going to drop. Owning a performance car might not be so bad after all.

Yeah but people are stupid.
I bought my first XR2 when I couldn't really afford it.
At the time it was a dream car (many years ago and I was only 17!). I spent nearly all my wage on insurance alone.

I'd never buy a performance motor now even if I could afford it.
I'd feel stupid for throwing so much cash at something thats only got to get me to work and back on a daily basis.

I retailed an 06 plate 3 Door ST [basic model but in that nice blue] last month for £9999 [was 19k miles and obviously still under warranty with Ford].

They're not exactly rare and they're not exactly popular in the current climate so I think any bid from a Dealer is a good shout! Try selling it yourself privately and you'll get what I mean.

They cocked it up! (or get people to be lured into it)

"now £17495 SAVE £6,085 "

So they are selling it for £17,495 and NOT the £6,085.

There's a really mint 07 plate with 10k miles on the clock at a dealer down the road from me, and they've dropped the price from £14990 to £12495 and it still won't sell. So they're not going to want to pay top dollar for them.
