Default cd burning question

i got a dvd/cd re-writer drive for my pc the other day, i didnt have any cd-r's to try it out so i found an old philips cd-rw that my mate gave me ages ago with some music on it, so i deleted this and then used this disk to copy my music, all word perfectly.
i got some new memorex cd-rw today and when i go to burn some more music it gets about halfway then stops and ejects the cd and i get a message saying there was a problem etc, i click on troubleshoot and it said make sure disk is free of dust etc!!?

i tried another disk in the box and its exactly the same!?

is it just that not all cd-rw/cd-r's are compatable or something?

It could be that, although CD-RW technology has been around a good while now so it shouldn't be so much of an issue (as say with DVD blanks). Check the speed rating of the discs and maybe try burning at a slower speed or a speed that the discs can handle.
