Only owned RST's including Fiesta's. Have been in and drive an R5 and was impressed with the low down performance compaired to some of my RSTs.

Both have pro's and cons of course. For me it would be an RST in Fiesta form.

You cannot not like a clean origianl R5 though - thats if youll find one!

Scooby-

Who owns, or cares, about standard R5s and RSTs? They are both shit slow, and something tells me this guy who started this thread doesnt plan to keep his standard.

In my unfortunate experiences of the standard ones, there not much in it top end, but R5GTT certainly is faster at lower speeds where it counts in lower power cars.
125bhp cars doing top end racing would be the most boring thing ever.

If going by book stuff, both had same top end, they both had almost the same power, GTT was faster to 60, shorter geared, and weighed over 100kg less.'

Opinions are fair enough, but "facts" that are not facts arnt good.

having owned a well modded S2 and a old 5Alive demo car I wouldn't mind either tbh. I reckon my S2 had the legs but only from 125 upwards, 0-120 R5 all the way both ran silly boost. If I had to choose it would be a healthy R5.

Also my mates run a Uno website and have seen many levels of tune only one impressed me which was just ported head, cam, T3 and 5th and 6th injectors even then put out only 200bhp but was rapid.

I'd have an R5 everytime. My mates last one ran 169bhp or something on APT's rollers and would pull low 5's to 60. Never forget one night after we'd been setting the fueling in it we went out to check everything was running ok. Stopped at a set of lights and next thing you know some guy in a WRX Scooby pulls up next to us, looks at us and starts giving it the big un to his mate in the car, lights change, scooby proper launches and gets about a car length on us.. as soon as my mates turbo spooled as it took a while it was all over. Absolutely spanked it up to about 100 it was no where to be seen and that was with 170 bhp. He's currently building a new one with Warley Petes old car being the base should be a monster when it's done.

It will be personal choice at the end of the day, they both older, ragged and probably just an unreliable as each other, the 5 did feel like a bean tin, some days the windows wouldn't work but blimey did it fly, felt like a roller skate, old 5 and s2 (sorry old 3 S2!):

r5's just come across a bit chav'y. Rs's are a bit more grown up.For example,if you worked in a office(for a large upmarket company) you could turn up in an escort rs s1 or 2 and people wouldnt think any different. Turn up in a r5 or even the fiesta turbo and you'd look like a peter pan.......the man that dont want to grow up.
thats just my opinion
Ive had all the the rst's and a r5. I love the sound of the r5's,but they make more noise than they actually go.As for big power r5's,yeah they are good @ qtr miles,But my mate had a 206bhp r5,and had a tear up with another mate in a 230bhp fiesta rst and there was no comparison. The r5 was in front up to 60,then the fiesta made it look like he had stamped on the brakes! And the matey in the r5 always felt he had something to prove to the rs boys so he'd give his r5 death!!!!lol

His r5 was fairly reliable to be fair.
But when he had a 30mph crash in the r5,you'd of thought he'd hit a wall head on at about 80! they are like tin foil!

I beg to differ, most people would thikn of them as a shitty old Ford as that how the majority of people see mk3/4 Escorts

i wonder why 206bhp vs 230bhp the 206bhp car lost.... even with a weight advantage up top end more power=faster to be fair!

good ol' R5 to me, look after em well, put a nice sturdy cage in em and ur fine.
seen a couple crashed at 20-30mph before... put it this way, the front bumper was touching the front shock absorbers....

5 with a cage... no compromise =).

im a fan of rwd, and think fwd is the curse of satan..... but those 5's and a B road are Lethal buggers, would give many a car a run for their money!

That was my experience too - from the 1% in my Company who knew what it is, the rest are clueless non-enthusiasts who only know what a BMW badge is so have to have 'one of those' to keep up with 'the Jones'
People thought I couldn't afford what, in their minds is, a 'decent' car, not that I drove a S2 as I liked it, and thats all that matters, plus the fact my S2 was worth more than their old compacts/3 series and didn't look like all the other sheep in the car park (obviously I'm not talking about new 3 series etc even the peeps with their Ł600 1996 316's think they're better because they have a BMW )

K-Tec are pretty good 5 tuners, BB were moving premises last I heard (or even AJ Tuning)

mate of mine had a similar problem with a polish guy at his work who was convinced that a standard 318is was faster than his tuned (albeit lightly) frst, he said it was just a kitted up fiesta, mate proved him wrong when he took him out in it lol

Why compare 850 kg (r5) vs 1080kg (s2)
Should it not be against the frst (910kg)

Anyways I SKipped both and went cosworth when I was 21 anyway.
My friend has a s2 rst running 150bhp daily driver, its reasonably quick. But main thing is its been reliable because its been looked after. I hate when people say oh dont get a ren 5, dont get an rst, dont get a cossie they're unreliable.

People forget these cars are 80's homologation.
So as STANDARD Road versions they dont compare to most modern day 16v na engines. But tune them and do it properly and the rewards are superb. Although to contradict myself wasnt the b16 around the same era lol.
