These links might help a bit more than I can:-

I've got an 03 530iSE that I recently took in px for my X5 and its not a bad motor in all fairness. I've had quite a few 5 series from a 520 to a B10. I'm not sure what MY your looking at but the only things that I've come across are:-

Electrics can play up at times which could be various sensors under the bonnet or switches in the cabin, check for head problems, oil & water mixing, miss-fires, etc. Not sure if nikasil bore liners will be a problem on the year your looking at. As its manual with that mileage, hows the clutch? Front wheel judder means about £75-100 a corner. Front screen seals. Can't really think of much more apart from the usual sort of things you look out for...

Full and preferably BMW service history as they're worth a lot less without it. Personally I wouldn't buy one without BM history AND with the receipts as any fool can reset the service lights.

Fuel wise, I'm getting approx low to mid 20's around town and mid 30's on a run which isn't bad considering its nearly 2 tonnes. I think it feels faster that what it actually is. Not the quickest thing in the world to 60 but pretty good from there onwards. Lot of car for the money in my opinion. Although the standard sound systems are totally shit.

Hope that helps

I had a 530i Sport on a 51 plate for a while, really liked it, sometimes the auto box used to piss about (sometimes didnt want to engage 5th etc) but that was about it. Mine had about 90k on it and drove like a dream!!
