Stretched Tyres
I'm a total noob when it comes to this, so just looking for a bit of advice
I've got some new wheels coming next week...8 inch wide, but I want to use 195 tyres, obviously meaning 'stretched tyres'
Can anywhere do this? Or do i need to go somewhere that specialises in this kind of thing?
If anyone can recommend somewhere in or around Leicestershire, that would be great!
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers, Olly!

If you must have gay stretched tyres then get whoever is fitting them to put them in hot water for a while before trying to get them on.

Mate thats nothing compared to what these VW numpties are doing to push the look a wee bit further....
But the new VW thing, which is taking the 'smoothing' ethic to a whole new level of stupid is to sand the markings off your tyres
I'm not really sure as to why though

this has made me laugh alot of guys n girls on here have said how much they love my car with the stretched tyres and never said they dont like it
far as safety goes they are fine ive given mine loads of abuse and ive been running them about 2 years now and never had any problems !!!!!!!!
drifters use more stretch then these are they dont have any problems , they make the side walls stiffer so less likely to flex and come off the rim :P
if you get it you'll love it , if you dont stop telling me i should of got "propper" tyres lol

im sure the police would LOVE it if you caused an accident, then were found to have stretched tyres.
Tyres are the only thing that keeps you on the road, why compromise that by putting tyres on that are too small
I totally disagree with it, and the fact many tyre places WONT fit them stretched tells you how legal it is

Its nothing to do with what they think you mean, if you asked them to put a 195 on an 8" wide wheel, they wouldnt do it, because its not safe, end of.

Race cars don't have concerns about arch clearance as they can build the car from the ground up and work the arches around the wheel size needed.
Race cars use extremely low profiles pretty much unavailable for road use so they can run wide tyres with minimum sidewall flex. If they made a 255/10 I'd run it but until then I'll stick with 225/40s
Race cars runs slicks go grip is maximised as it is, we cant run slicks so every little bit towards controlled handling helps.
Race car designers dont really care if their car looks 'pimp' whereas the vast majority of us are concerned with functionality and looks [otherwise we'd all be driving around in bare shells with every possible switch, bulb and wire removed for weight savings
Check the rear wheel. Ice racing = lots of sideways, they use stretch because it makes the breakaway between grip and drift more predictable.
That enough?

a bit more info for you as well
" Council Directive 78/549/EEC of 12 June 1978 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the wheel guards of motor vehicles
2.1.2. The rear of the wheel guards must not terminate above a horizontal plane 150 mm above the axis of rotation of the wheels (as measured at the wheel centres) and furthermore the intersection of the edge of the wheel guard with this plane (point A, figure 1) must lie outside the median longitudinal plane of the tyre, or in the case of twin wheels the median longitudinal plane of the outermost tyre.
2.1.3. The contour and location of the wheel guards shall be such that they are as close to the tyre as possible ; and in particular within the part formed by the radial planes referred to in 2.1.1, they shall satisfy the following requirements: 2.1.3.1. the projection - situated in the vertical plane of the tyre axis - of the depth (p) of the outer edge of the wheel guards, measured in the vertical longitudinal plane passing through the centre of the tyre, must be at least 30 mm. This depth (p) may be reduced progressively to zero at the radial planes specified in 2.1.1;
In short, the wheel must NOT protrude more than 30mm past the edge of the mudguard.
Also from 2 different tyre manufcaturers
Dunlop
"RIM WIDTH
Correct rim width ensures flex at the designed flex point in a tire sidewall for optimum tire performance.
If the rim is too wide, the flex point moves towards the rim area, causing heat buildup in the lower sidewall, which reduces tire life and could result in failure. Either too narrow or too wide of a rim can result in uneven tread/pavement contact pressure causing uneven wear and potentially reduced traction, or increased vulnerability to bead dis-lodgement. "
Toyo
"Serious personal injury or death can result from failure to select the proper tire and rim: Tire MUST match the width and diameter requirements of the rim. When mounting truck type radial tires use only wheels approved for radial tires.
NEVER put flammable substances in tire/rim assemblies at any time. Never put any flammable substance into a tire/rim assembly and attempt to ignite to seat the beads.
NOTE TO PROFESSIONAL TIRE INSTALLERS: Exceeding the maximum bead seating pressure — The tire service person must NEVER INFLATE BEYOND 40 POUNDS PRESSURE TO SEAT BEADS unless specified by the tire manufacturer! "
and another bit
"Here's something to think about regarding stretching:
you wont get much grip with a 195/45 fitted to a 9 inch rim, esp when you compare it to a 6,5-7 inch rim.
When fitting a 195/45VR to 8 inch rim, the effective speed rating is HR, and the effective load rating is 10% less than what is stated on the sidewall. On a 9 you would probably be down to a SR speed rating
The above is true when having less than 2 degrees of chamber, more than that and you will have even lower effective ratings
The sidewalls are just not built to take load at an angle.
overstretching is just beeing ignorant imho. If you have any respect for your car, your life and other motorists, you do not overstretch tyres. Your tyres are at high risk for becoming unseated in bumps or under hard cornering.
What you are saying really, when you are overstretching, is that TÜV is ignorant and do not know what they are doing and have been doing for the last 30-40 years!
Some might say that it is safe, because they have tried it themselfes, but there has been quite a few accidents in Germay with stretched tyres. This why Germans are not allowed to run 175/50-13 on 7/8-13 anymore"

some RIGHT shit posted here there should be some kind of box you tick on replying to any post (YES i have experience of this) or (NO im just guessing and making out i know what im on about, however, chances are im typing utter bollocks just as i like to post)
195 on an 8 isnt even a stretch, would look normal, any tyre person and put it on, and it will drive totally normally.
ive got 225s on a 9.5 and once again, any old tyre monkey puts it on in the usualway with no effort at all, and drives and handles totally normally.

Stavros i was using it as an example and i thought after i posted it, that was wrong
The info i have provided above makes me pretty sure how unsafe they are though.
its not a case of how it drives and handles, its the safety aspect. MEGA stretching imo is stupidity.

read the latest issue of pvw mag and there was a lil note in the beggining about when one of the mag writters stretched tyes over some mega wide wheels on a vw bora and posted the pics up.... the link went from forum to forum finally ending up on pistonheads where they actually got police involved coz they were so offended by stretched tyres.....
moral of the story, pistonheads is full of pricks
