My old MR2 didn't have the slightest bit of rust on it, apart from two mild steel bolt-on strengthening bars in the engine bay (easily replaced).. They are fantastic cars in my opinion.

ive not had an mr2 but i have had a similar era celica. that rusted like fook and i replaced all the body with dealer panels. really thin compared to german stuff. was slow as fuck as well until i put a cossie engine in it.

The MK1 Mr2 rusts faster than any ford I've ever seen, and on the MR2 forums it seems to be widely accepted that a rub with the grinder and some filler will sort it out....... ![](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/tantpis.gif)
The Mk2 MR2's were built of sterner stuff. I had a 1990 MK2 with absolutely no rust on it anywhere.

wtf is this
So not specifically developed for the escort cosworth, just borrowed from the sierra cosworth so ford could still have a rally car when the sierra ceased production, without spending a lot on development again.
the floorpan was based on a mark 4 rare rs turbo shell not a sierra cosworth, because ford didnt do the mark 4 4wd rs turbo thay then decided to make the escort cos

It was. But Boreham first experimented with putting it in a Mk4 Shell. Then they decided it wouldn't sell and gave up.
They put it in the Mk5 2 years later, but with the 24v V6 first. Then they finally used 4x4 and the Cossie engine. I'm sure someone will correct me on the details.

Your MR2 was surprisingly solid when we did the interior swap, can't remember there being much rust at all.

All sounds correct to me - apart from i thought the 24v V6 was an after thought, around 1993-1995 they were looking at putting the V6 version into production.

Shame the people in the owners club can't see past that

its a sierra floor cut down basically... hence why everything from a sierra bolts straight on to it.

i replaced every body panel on my old celica in a complete restoration using main dealer panels that cost thousands, in 1999-2000. by the time i wrote it off in 2004 some of those panels had excessive rust .paper thin panels. mechanically great until i also put a cossie engine in , then it caused me no end of problems.

trust me ford did make 4x4 escort mk4 development cars, they had a habit around 89-92 of making stuff and flogging it off as scrap only for it to end up in a breakers yard. now i don't know if the car sue collins built (4x4 rsturbo) from genuine ford parts that was featured in the mags back in about 1992 was the same parts ford motorsport boreham used but they did have a "mule" in which to test things for the forthcoming escort cosworth.
the thing with 4x4 escorts was back in 82 when ford were fucking about with rwd rally escorts still and audi were stuffing them, the fella in my avatar took his new escort xtrac to ford as he was getting big budgets from ford motor company for the rallycross programme he was undertaking and this new idea was mooted and then dissmissed.
if the idiots at ford had made the escort xtrac into a rally car it too would of kicked everones arses in rallying just as the escort xtrac did in rallycross

Oh dear, jealousy really does lead people to make the most ridiculous comments. Hope you have the chance to own a cossie one day mate, you'll take back every word.
put up on a thread on the mr2oc a pic of the monte carlo escos for sale on here and look what one of the replies was....if i could reach through the screen i would of poked him in the eye![](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/pascontent.gif)
Apologies if I offend with this, but I seriously don't get that. However fast and clever it is around a track, it's still a Ford Escort with a barryboy spoiler and custom paint.
If you want to spend tens of thousands of pounds making a seriously fast car, aren't you better off starting with something that's actually good to begin with, like an NSX or something?
There's a reason why I drive an MR2 rather than a Escort Cosworth - which is mainly because my car doesn't look like the average family saloon with some plastic bits glued on, but also because the car starts out as a better car* right from the drawing board. I don't think I'll ever understand why people 'tune', kit and custom-paint Vauxhaul Corsas either.
*better car for driving fast. The Escort totally whips the MR2 when it comes to transporting people and shopping.
then his second reply:

as for being an escort the shell is totally different to an standard shell (ie wider arches, strengthened, tunnel for propshaft, etc etc) PROPER MOTORSPORT! cheers Statey
No, not really, but ALL of my points remain - it still started out as an Escort. Okay, it's had money spent on it to make it better than a stock one, but surely the same money spent on a car that was a better design to start with would result in a better car? Whatever you do to it, the center of gravity will always be 6-10" higher than an MR2. Whatever you do to it, it will always have most of the weight at the front at rest. Spend Cosworth money on an MR2 and you can have 400+BHP just the same.
No, not been in a Cossie, just the poor-man's version, an RS Turbo - and THAT really was a waste of money. I don't doubt that an expensively modified Cosworth is a fantastic car to drive, but if you throw £20k+ at any car you should really end up with something pretty awesome. What I just cannot get is why anyone would throw that kind of money at such a run-of-the-mill daily runabout shopping car. Why not start with something better and work up from there?
WHAT A MEAT lol![Big Grin](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
