Default moving the b pillars back

moving the b pillars back

right guys im considering doing this in my focus van project .

assuming the car is a bar shell and i have all the parts required.. how much do you think it will cost to

cut out old b pillars, and weld up holes/make good,
repostion new pillars further back to accomodate the longer doors from a 2 door model ,
i dont want anything else doing behind the b pillar yet as there is a bit more work to do with the van panel etc

any ideas on a cost and who would do it?

I'm guessing that you are starting with a 5 door estate shell?

It will be do-able - look at the 2 door Sapphires which, I reckon, would have a longer wheelbase. You will obviously need it done right for safety as well as looks, but I'd guess it will probably be expensive.

As it's to be a van you won't need unique side windows as you can panel them in steel but I think it could be hard to make that look "right".

find the longer doors first
then cut the pillers out
then cut the pillers out of another donor so youv'e got more metal to trim back
fit to the door
fit door to car
close door
make sure shut lines are fine
weld into place
fill in gaps
job jobbed

i reckon its do-able yourself if you can weld don't forget to strengthen the shell before you remove the pillars though, just tack in a bar or two infront and behind of the pillar you're going to remove.

but it is, the welding bit is just to make it look good for the finishing
that's why you cut out the post short to fold the metal over and (if you can) buy a new post to put back in

if you can get the whole sides from a 2 door focus that would make it easier, that way you could cut the sills and roof pillars quite a way forward from the donor car then would cover where you took out the old pillar and would look ok as you would have the correct shape for the rear of the door aswell, also if you cut the 1/4 quite far back aswell that would give you metal to cover where the rear door used to be

that was going to be my sugestion, get yourself down a breakers and cut from just behind the wing and top of the a pillar all along the sill the just in front of the rear arch and a good way past the top of the b pillar and then weld that into the estate/van.

would be easy enough and any body shop should be willing to do that if you dont fancy doing it yourself, if you explain it that way atleast....

how would it make it harder to park as you would have longer windows using the 3 dr doors over the 5 door ones that are currently going to be used so the pillar will be futher back giving you better periferal (how ever you spell it) vision

basically that is all there is to it as long as you measure and mark up on the estate/van well and carefully then you will be ahlf way there as you dont have to try to line lots of diff things up!

keeping it tidy will be the hardest bit!

this is verry doable mate but you would need 2 full sides from a 2door focus to do it properly i can do it but without seeing exactly what would be envolved i cant realy put a price on it

would you be doing filler work or would you want it done by the garage
