Default Watches...

Want the people of PF, especially those into watches, for a bit of advice regarding buying one for my dad. He is turning 60 in a few weeks and thought of getting him one.

Ain't got buckets of cash but willing to listen to any suggestions but I'm going to put a price cap at roughly £500 say.

Also, does anybody know a good place to buy one? Online or high street retail?

Cheers!

Do you have any idea of what sort of watches he actually likes?

Why not get a watch mag and say you want to buy one and ask him his opinion and he may just point it out?

At the moment he has an Omega which he has had for about 40 odd years and even though it's a very nice one, it doesn't run properly and part of where the strap clamps on has broken and the face is dirty. Unfortunately, I cannot stretch to another Omega. Just want people's suggestions. Think along those lines though and basically nothing designer like armani or D&G or something. I've looked at Tag Heuer but they a bit out my price range too.

how about getting his one refurbed? cleaned and a new strap?

he's obviously quite attached to it, so maybe that could be an idea?

Refurb sounds good tbh.

And yes he wears it every day. But how do I pry it off him as he wears it every day?

And where would I take it that wouldn't fuck it up? It's been for a service before and they fucked the timing up on it so it runs slow

Cheers guys!

if you want it refurbed take it into a local Beaverbrooks and get them to give you the details and a watch pack to get it sent off.

if you fancy another swiss brand try raymond weil.

Still hand assembled, swiss made and are a family owned company.

http://www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/index....productID=4378

That's in your price range too, comes with saphire glass and is quartz so he wouldnt have a problem switching between watches and worry bout them stopping.

Any questions just ask away.

Get ya mum to do the deed...i'm sure a few bad words will be said about her but on the day peace will be made! I'd get in touch with omega and find out where to send it...make sure you allow plenty of time tho

Im a watch fanatic and i'd deffo go the refurb route for his Omega, you wont be able to buy him a better watch for £500 but you could make his old one good as new.

Hope that helped

Im quite in to watches myself and have a 1966 bulova accutron spaceview which is keeping as good time as my mates new watches and they come sort ov between years 1960 to 1973 so theres a big range and is the only movement in the world that doesnt tick the seconds hand consistently moves unlike the automatic watches of today like the rolex's haha

As said a good refurb might be the way to go. Hamilton do some nice watches for decent prices. Or maybe a Tutor? I think they might be around £500? Or a 2nd hand watch from somewhere like watches.co.uk

sentimental value is likely high - if he didnt like it I cant imagine he would have kept it that long.
