Guess the lambda on my escos is broken. I have one that fits my mondeo v6. The one on the escos is 3lead and the one on the mondeo 4lead. Any chance it can be used??
the 4th wire ( being a zirconia sensor) is used to heat the sensor upon start up, within 8 seconds this temp can rise to 500 degrees. its there to obtain closed loop quicker basically, to make the vehicle more efficient asap.. personally i would pop down the local parts dealer and get a ngk aftermarket job...
You first need to establish which type of sensor it is, having 4 wires does NOT mean it's a zirconia, it could just as easily be a titania.
If it has a RED wire it IS a titania, if it has no red wire it is a zirconia, in which case the extra wire is purely and earth(grey), the other three being black signal, and two white heater wires.
These type work on 0.1V to 0.9V.
A titania sensor is used on much later fords normally amd work from 1V-0V or others are 5V to 0V.
It gets even more confusing now as the signal wire can now be blue as well as lots of other colours.

You CANNOT use the ford V6 4 wire sensor. Its signal output is sustantially lower than most types of sensor (less than 0.4 volts full scale).
Using this even if wired correctly will make the car run very rich and lumpy !
