the 4th wire ( being a zirconia sensor) is used to heat the sensor upon start up, within 8 seconds this temp can rise to 500 degrees. its there to obtain closed loop quicker basically, to make the vehicle more efficient asap.. personally i would pop down the local parts dealer and get a ngk aftermarket job...
