overfilling with oil - what damage
not me or my car
workmate comes up to me today asking/telling me about his car (2 yr old passat tdi)
basically "oil light" came on now i dont know if its the level indicator or the pressure light but anyway it came on so he goes to a place local to work he has used for a while for bits and bobs, the bloke gets the young lad whos a trainee or summat to put some oil in and andy goes on his way (no cash changes hands)
3 days later the car just cuts out and wont restart so andy calls the aa, they come out and he talks them through whats happened and after the aa bloke had drained out the excess 6 litres of oil it then restarts and he says that sounds bad mate i'll tow it to a garage for you.....not the same garage this time i might add but some place near his house... matey at this garage comes out and listens to it and says he gonna have to strip it down to see whats what, bent rods were mentioned andy said to me but that means nothing to him so i didnt elaborate i didnt know what to say to the poor bloke, i guessed hes looking at a whopping bill and hes mentioning a few hundred quid in passing convo to me so i said just wait to hear the report from matey
so a few things id like comments on here please.....
whats the implications of letting some cock fill the engine oil up right the way up to the rocker cover cap (3 days running about done like this!!)
whats the chance of any come back from the place that filled it up given no cash or reciept changed hands

It Wasnt Me!
tbh i dont think any come back is feesable as the bloke did him a favour in the first place, but u can look at it 2 ways, the other being he let an "apprentice" who was clearly not capable to give a hand and fooked up so it's really their fault, so its wether the bloke wants to help or not i'd say as no money changed hands so if it went as far as court then nothing could be done!
im surprised it ran for 3 days filled to the gunnils, thats mad!! it must of been smoking its tits off suerly? dont know much about diesel engines to comment on what could be the prob

over filling is as bad as under filling, especially in a diesel.what can happen is that the engine can pick up the oil from the sump and start burning it as fuel making it as though the throttle is jammed fully open.this happened once when i was on my apprenticeship, the other lad that was training with me did an service on the bosses Isuzu trooper TD and over filled the oil .boss goes to drive home, gets on the motorway just as the turbo seals wave goodbye, engine gets a gob full of oil, which, being a diesel it compresses and combusts as a fuel source, this obviously takes the revs right up which in turn increases the oil pressure making the oil in the sump start invading the cylinders, which again gets burnt making the Trooper take off like a mad thing straight into the back of a Micra.needless to say he didn't get the chance to finish his apprenticeship.

just finding my feet
i remember hwen i ;eft my lights on me orion over night once, i got the garage ( now turned into proper mint flats ) to give me a jump start, they send a twat with as mich knowlege as me on cars to jump start me off a tigra,, anyway he attaches the ground from my car to the live on the tigra and the live on mine to the ground on the tigra, lots of sparks but i dont noyice as im in me car about the start the fooker, he revs the engine i try to start and shit loads of smoke and sparks, car dont stat but the jumo leads are fooking charcoal
anyway i decidew to charge the batt as i should have done
car works fine for about a day then the rev counter jumps tp the beats on me music and the car cuts out, car bat is dead
reason for it, the fooking alt has been fired by the garage using the fooking leads the wrong way round
anyway i was gonna ask em for me money but tbh i didnt have a leg to stand on
all part of life teaching tbh

In short, the bloke is gonna have an expensive bill at the end of it....
My advice is ALWAYS get a bill off a garage and keep it. If he had a bill for carrying out a oil level check and replen as nessesary plus X litres of oil then he could have gone back to the garage and handed their arses to them on a plate. As it is now, he is going to get shafted with the bill...

First thing he might want to do is contact the owner of the garage who did him a favour and tell him (as some friendly advice) what his apprentice has done. The guy might have some sympathy and offer to rebuild for free or something, got to be worth a try approaching him on a friendly level.

remember when i brought an old Renault 5 drove it home an it seemed fine started it the next day and it smoked the street out, turned out it had about 3 liters to much oil init , no damage done though luckely. drained the excess and it was fine.
