Default Focus 1.8 16v zetec

Right i know this is a poo engine compared 99% of the cars on here but im going to work with what i have got

Looking for some power improvements

To date it has

Full mongoose system on it
K+N induction kit with cold air feeds
Jackson Racing throttle body - In the post was £75
stage 1 kent cams - unfitted got them off my mate an they are in great nick
Will try get a remap end of this month at wallace performance

Can you suggest anything else an will i see a improvement with it or have i wasted my money.

Im not clued up on tuning so any help would be great

I only got this last week lol

The plan was to sell the Vectra an get a loan or HP for a big power car but i decided i shouldnt as i cant be arsed paying a car up or a loan an my gf makes everything expensive to insure.

Thanks

Connor

Already made a good start! Consider uprating the brakes, the later you can hit the brakes before a corner then the quicker you will be point to point, also think about good suspension, the faster you can corner then the less you will need to slow down.

You could spend a lot of money on the engine, but you will see very little gain. Best bet would be forced induction, a bolt on powerworks supercharger kit would be nice

Well it has a gmax kit on it the now but i want to swap them out for Coilovers
As for breaks i am going to the scrappys tomorrow to look for a rear disc conversion as for some reason they put drums on the rear.

Would ST170 brakes be a decent upgrade?

Also contemplating stripping the rear out. Its my motor but the missus uses it an she is sound with that

Thanks

well the brakes on my st170 are really good, far better than the ones on my old 1.6 focus. Rear discs only came on the 2.0 models. Good luck with the search!

A good improvement will be taking that Jackson Racing TB and throwing it as far away from your engine as possible . I take it you haven't got it fitted yet. Reason being is that those throttle bodies (by the way I've tried a CFM one which is probably the better one and the JR one which was CACK) are unnecessary unless you go forced induction and the standard throttle body is good for 170bhp anyway.

What happens is the TPS doesn't sit right and makes the engine run like a bag of rusty spanners going around a washing machine. The throttle stop isn't quite right either and basically they just will not run correctly . Countless number of posts on the FFOC about shitty JR throttle bodies. So if I were you, get rid and get some money back.

Ahh now that is out of the way, engine is not poo AT ALL! I have a 1.8 focus and to be honest, there is nothing wrong with their engines. Just because everyone on here has super dooper cosworth engines and CVH engines with gigantic turbos from the Fred Flinstone era doesn't mean you should feel intimidate or feel like you have an inferior engine.

Cams will get you a nice improvement but get the cams in and then get the car mapped. Also consider some vernier pulleys (I have Kent Cam Pulleys...very nice!!). Also, a 4-2-1 Manifold will see you get some very nice gains all across the rev range. Best one is the ST170 manifold but is a bit harder to fit than others due to power steering clearance issues but Millitek and Piper do a 4-2-1. Stay away from the OBX 4-1, stories about cheap quality and cracked manifolds surrounding those.

As for brakes, the rear disc conversion is a good idea although how beneficial it will be I don't know. I don't think ST170 brakes are quite necessary unless you will be doing trackdays or something or running close to ST170 power but the standard brakes with decent grooved discs e.g. black diamond or tarox and a good brake pad compound along with a good bleed if the brake fluid hasn't been changed for 2-3 years should be fairly adequate imo.

A lad on FOC has a OBX an said it was REALLY hard to fit

ST170 manifold needs a bit of fettling to fit although it will bolt on, there is a power steering pipe clearance issue which needs to be sorted. There's other bits you made need as well but I can't think of them right now.

Piper 4-2-1 or Millitek 4-2-1 though would bolt straight on I think and still give you very good gains.

Some of the special edition models had them. The Focus Silver does and this is a 1.6.

iv fitted the st170 manifold/cat/flexi to my 1.8 and im impressed wit it. feels if it accelerates betta. its quitened my car dwn a bit, but sounds awesome when openin her up or revvin her, think i av vid on photobucket sumwhere!!

iv got fittin guide for st170 manifold if ya want it. all u need fit it is manifold and flexi and cat (or decat), st170 dipstick tube, all the gaskets and a blanker for one of the o2 sensors which needs to be moved due to driveshaft. the ps pipe is fine using std one, jus loosen and rotate the bit dwn the side to the front of engine. mine has bin fine so far!

U fitted the cams yet? iv got a set im waitin fit?

Matt
