rx7 vs 200sx
all this talk of rx7s and 200sx's coupled with the imminent sale of my mk2 shell has got me thinking... which would be better just to generally cane about in for a bit of a laugh?
i prefer the look of the rx, but all this talk of rotor tips and crazy plumbing fo rthe turbos is kind of putting me off a bit.
can't be massively expensive to buy as it'll just be with the change from my mk2 shell/bits when it goes.

RX7 would be my choice.
BUT the safe bet, by miles, would be the 200SX.
Nothing much to note on a SX, thats the good thing, if it seems fine, it probably is.
If you buy one with something wrong with it, like it knocking or smoking or blowing, you must know nowt about cars to have bought it in the first place.

200sx all the way
altho im slightly biased as i have a s14a with full hks 2.2 engine build and gt35
rex's are to unreliable if trying to get power out of them and if you give it a good seeing to alot of times stick with the proper piston engine lol
another thing that has always put me off rx7s altho they rev high they produce low amount of torque
altho my friend has a tasty 600 bhp rex that he competes in hks drag series but gonna have a 200 chasing him down now i hope

thanks folks.
Stav - why would you have the rx7 if the 200's a safer bet?
not like i don't knwo anythign about cars so i should ba able to avoid a shitter with one of them.. no clue abotu rotaries though. (other than looking at the thread on uktuner about the guy pulling his to pieces to sort it out)

On smartys comments-
IMO if you want BIG power, like 500+ youd be way way better off with an RX over a 200SX. Its at lower power their reliability querks make em annoying.
And IMO the torque thing isnt true either, they drive way nicer than most piston engines. Even properly ridiculous 1000bhp drag engines drive quite nice, due to the nature of the rotary engine.
But as a lower modified car that you dont want loads of hastle with, 200SX all the way.
Mark-
Because I wouldnt be happy with "normal" power, and I know rotaries well enough for the issues to not be a big deal.
And they look better, sound better, go better.
If you want to be scared off, check out the vac hose diagram for the stock sequential turbo setup, lol...

Half of that is hidden under the stock inlet, and though dont fuck up often (usually its just split boost pipes etc causing trouble, and they dead easy to get to, like most the engine), when they do, its a ballache, another reason most head to a big single straight away.

Also if you get a 200sx with the sr20det in beware the most common problem with them is vvti rattle, its a light tapping between tickover and 1500 revs but quiet after that once the oil pressure picks up well till next time you start it
i had this problem mine got very bad to the point that is was a LOUD knocking
the sprocket is around Ł600+vat from dealer altho can sorce new ones from oz at around Ł250-Ł300 or just scrap it like i have but you will lose mid-range torque
If you would like to know more feel free to pm me
If you would like a nice example i would try the owners club www.sxoc.com

Dunno i should have around the 500bhp mark for now and seems fine i can start it easily when warm unlike a heavily modded rex and if it floods i dont have to tow it in gear to clear it
And thats just the start
But suppose its all down to personnal opinion not saying the rex is no good as they are a very very good car but just seem to be alot of hassle with the people i know that owns them
They both have there pro's and con's like every other car i suppose
Stav - do you keep adding stuff to that post? everytime i look back there's more stuff! definitely a scary vacuum hose pic. not sure i'll be happy with normal power either.. and you're right they do look a shit load better.
probably go for the 200sx just for the lesser amount of hassle at the moment though i think!
smarty - how much ŁŁŁŁ do you reckon you've ploughed into it to get to that kind of power level?

I didnt mean normal power, for me id want 500+ as thats what im used to.
If your on about that power and didnt want a rotary or bigger engine, stick with a YB over an SR.
Better powerband, less aftermarket bits needed, etc etc etc.

hard to say as i was lucky and got it all trade, but also had all coilovers adjustable rosejointed arms cage brakes etc etc list goes on but its a fair amount of ŁŁŁ, obv been hell of alot cheaper if you dint go for hks alot of other good cheaper makes out there its just i wanted to build it once and not really have to pull it apart again. So used the supposed best stuff
Altho my opinions on hks have changed alot had lots of trouble with them over a bearing collaping in a 3 day old turbo and warrenty etc
that vacuum hose diagram looks mad so glad i dont have to find a vacuum leak on a standard rex lol

what makes you say that i know it may seem like im trying to pick at everything youu are saying i just like debating
as i thought the sr would be much more realiable engine much more advanced coil over plug etc etc. Altho you are treading a fine line on standard internals and gearbox at around 400bhp
i have uprated my box to the 300zx box (also known as the z32) with twin plate clutch and custom prop as these are apprently on par with the supra standard boxes.
the company that proiduce kit has a z32 on there full on low9 second drag car with standard gears etc

Coil on plug wont help either, its not more advanced really, and the valvetrain design is poor too.
But like a Cossie, stock engine and box can do 400.
Unlike a Cossie tho, an SR cant do 600 on stock rods and crank with perfect reliability.
But id deffo have an SR over rotary or YB at lower power levels.
And handling/stopping/looks/interior a stock or debatably even a modded SR is fucking miles better than a Cossie, esp suspension, where it light years away.
i had a 280bhp S14a, absolutly ace, had vvt rattle when i bought it, but that seemed to stop after a couple weeks :S
will have another in a heartbeat if i ever sell the cos. can deffo recommend
