Default Riddle

3 lads walk into a hotel, and the receptionist charges them £30 for a room (3 sharing).

Later the receptionist realises a mistake, the room should only be £25 so he gives the porter a fiver and tells him to go and give the lads in the room the five pounds.

Porter thinks about it and thinks he you cant share five pounds between 3 of them so keeps two pounds for himself and gives 3 pounds back to the lads in the room.

But heres the tricky bit:

They paid ten pounds at first but are given a pound back so effectively they pay 9 pounds each.

9+9+9=27
Add in the 2 for the porter....

27+2=29

Wheres the other pound gone????

Do NOT reply with the solution please, just reply saying if its obvious to you or not what the solution is, as im interested to see if most people find it obvious or not?

I dont believe you need any more than the maths skills we normally have by about aged 10, its a different thing its testing, its testing wether or not you accept things said to you without testing them for yourself IMHO, its NOT a maths problem as such.

The answer, is that the question is invalid mate.

Its not a test of maths, its a test of wether you beleive what you are told without questioning it.

30 quid ended up as follows:
3 refunded to the lads
2 kept by the porter
25 paid for the room

So the 9 pounds each they paid to be 27, was 25 for the room and 2 for the porter.

The porters amount wasnt added to the 27 to make 29, it was subtracted from the 27 to make the 25 the room cost.

So the riddle, is simply spotting that the riddle is wrong.

Maybe an easy way of showing it is:

100 - 10% = 90
Then add that 10% back:
90 + 10% = 99

Bit like working out transmission losses only works one way.

Guess it is either glaringly obvious, or baffling as fuck, depends on how your brain works.

27+2=29

Wheres the other pound gone????

so what your saying is that there is £30 the porter takes £2 which leaves £28 how does that now work out each lad has paid £9 another £1 has appeared out of thin air

£30 total devided thus:

£3 refund to the lads.

Move on.lol

you assume that because someone has said "they paid £9 each for the room" that they did
they paid £28 for the room not the £25 they should have as the porter took the other £2 and leftthem with an extra £ to divide amongst themselves

Pounds are fixed values, percentages arent, adding 10% on and taking 10% are not a reverse process like adding a pound on and taking a pound off.
