I was fine until my mate grabed the back of my chair, started shaking it shouting turbulence at the top of his voice.

Fookin' hell, picked a hell of a flight for your first time!

Take loads of sweets to suck on as your taking off, will stop that wee little pop you get as you climb altitude...

turbulance can be that bad that you think the plane is fooked but in reality its fine, so dont worry to much if the plane starts bouncing around

I've done loads of flying and it's actually quite boring on a long flight, the takeoffs and landings are the most exciting bit!
Watch the films and take something to read and get all the drinks you can on the plane. Don't drink too much though or you'll be in a constant queue for the toilets, and they are sooo small.

Worst flight out of somewhere I had was from Iceland in winter at night. They got us all on the plane and there was blizzard force snow and the plane was rocking from side to side on the stand because of the strength of the wind. In the end they decided not to take off and put us up in the Grand Hotel in Rekjavik for the night. The next morning the snow ploughs were clearing the snow off the runway and the plane was being deiced right up to the time we took off. Slightly hair raising.

They're usually pretty uneventful though. The turbulence can be scary if you've not experienced it before but nothing to worry about. The last few flights I've been on have been incredibly smooth.

You don't have anything to worry about mate. Get it, get sat down, get in the air and then let the steward/stewardesses fill you full of kak food and a bit of booze, watch the films and read something or listen to the entertainment they have. Just enjoy it mate. Once you're off the ground and have stopped climbing you'll soon wonder why you were bothered about it, and if it's a decent day there's some fab views out of the windows.

My first ever flight was to America about 8 years ago. I was a little apprehensive but I loved it. The take off and landings are great. Try to get a window seat.

Was going to say, get a window seat. Remember my first time, was only Holland, but was awesome. Taking off by a window does your head, but its great.

Think the best was coming back from Zante, flew straight over a storm. Superb seing the cloud charge before the lightning bolt.

let me set your mind at ease.... flying is one of the safest methods of transport, there are thousands upon thousands of flights each day with no incidents... and if the engines do cut out or something they can still glide for about 50 miles or so at crusing altitude so your not just gonna drop out of the sky or anything.... I know this as my girlfriend works as an air hostess, she is always telling me stories like the other day, a flight she was on lost all the power and engines etc for a few minutes, said it was quite scary... personally id be shitting myself! seriously though you will be fine.

that has not helped 50 miles thats no good over the ocean i thought they could stay up the ages with no engine power

I could be wrong about the 50 miles bit.... dont let your mind get carried away about it, the facts are its the safest form of transport around and there are thousands of flights each day with no problems! trust me you will be fine and probably enjoy it.

Please dont come back and tell us about how cheap the petrol is!
you will be fine , you will have a grin on your face by the time the plane leaves the tarmac honest.
I was worried the first time, you will be fine mate.

Are you flying during the day or at night? For some reason I always found there to be a lot more turbulance at night rather than during daylight (could just be co-incidence).

Take pleanty to read, PSP or similar to pass the hours. Or get really tanked the night before and sleep all the way there.
