Default Any one know much about ponds?

I am looking at changing my pond, mainly because its on the wrong side of the garden so gets too much direct sunlight during the day and also because i think the size of the pond is limiting the growth of the fish.

My fish are mainly Koi with a few goldfish, what kinda depth is ideal and any advice on plants, liners etc?

I would idealy go from 1 foot to 5 foot + and make the sides sloped so its hard for a herring to land. With it being a sloped bottom the fish can get into the deeper water in winter and move into the shallower warmer water in summer

To keep you water clear i would use a UV light tube and an eco filter it will filter the water nicely.

I would also have a couple of golden orf in the pond as they are very suseptible to disease so if there is a problem in the water they will die first it will give you enough time to test and treat the water.

If you want anymore info just PM me mate

How do fella, I dont know a great deal but the Koi pond should be 1500mm deep (4ft) minimum, and the minimum temp of 14.degrees C, you shouldnt feed Koi if lower than 8degrees. Get yourself down to A5 aquatics, on the A5 by the Longshoot pub, Hinckley. for more info, get some reading material chat with the old fellas there but have an idea of what you want or you WILL get confused. good luck matey

I have a UV clear water system, but never got it out the box as I never finished the pond. Like a big bucket with the lamp in the lid and all the filters etc

Cost me 145.00 from A5 aquatics, may be selling it 100 quid, pm me iff interested. As I say, stilled boxed and never used. I am only down the road in Coventry.

Also go the pump that sits in the pond, but has been used a couple of times to occassionally empty the pond - 5 or six times amybe.

Lillys are good to add and offer shade the fish in the summer. My dad kept koi for a lot of years. For things like blanket weed he never used blanket weed treatment he use to add salt to the water that soon took care of it.

I would defo recomend a pond layout like this

You can make the filter bed and pond all from one liner with no joins. The water fall also helps to add air to the water. In real hot weather it is recomend to have an air pump as well to keep oxygen levels up in the water as hot weather takes the oxyegen out of the water

It is also recomended befor you put the liner in put a nice layer of sharp sand in the bottom and make sure no jaggerd stones are there and for the sides lay blankets all round simler to the ones removal people use it makes sure the liner is on a good smooth base as the presure exerted on it when fullof water is huge so better to be safe then sorry

Hope that helps
