Default what do i need to build a pond for Koi?

Can some one give me a break down of what i need to build a pond to keep a few Koi carp in?

Obviousely, a hole, liner, plants, but what pumps and filters do i need?? i will have some kind of a waterfall maybe(depending on costs)

I would be looking at digging a hole about 3ft deep by about 4ft across and 6ft long-roughly.

Hmm is this big enough for about 6-8 koi of about 8" long??

thanks
steve.

I'd say it was too small mate, I'm sure they grow to more then a foot in length!

Koi means carp, so apparently you're not meant to call them Koi carp, just Koi

Your pond sounds very small for what can be huge fish. Mine's about that size for 4 goldfish (and their babies)!

Thanks.

For what its worth ive read that 3ft deep is about right for Koi (carp ) but would be better at about 4ft or deeper, the info i really need is on the pumps and filters, obviousely the pump/filters will be dependant on size of pond and lt/per hour, but i need to know what sort im after.

Steve, my stuff is:

Filtoclear 6000 = never been used still in the box brand new
Laguna PJ Max flow 2200 - sat in the pond, used a couple of times to pump out - box should still be in teh loft
approx 20' ribbed piping maybe more

That lot costs about £300 but feel free to have a quick check.

£100 if you want it mate for the lot.

No worries mate, hopefully a few on here will be able to say what stuff is best for you. Just thought I would offer it as it is sat doing nothing so if it saves someone else a few quid then happy days.

Drop me a pm if you think it will be suited to what your doing after you have done a bit of reading up.

If you got the space build it big as you will end up making it bigger in the end, as deep as you can go (5-6 ft is good), fit a bottom drain and gravity feed your filter. You will need a decent base and depending on how big its going to be you will need to lay your blocks flat (not on edge). I used the large blocks with two holes in them and put reed bar and cement through them later for max strength. Take a look at this site, it will help no end

http://forum.koimag.co.uk

I will post some pics when I have time (4200 gal, two bottom drains, nexus, ultra sieve and clarity unit).

And you thought that fords were expensive lol..

i build mine last year ,the 6th pond iv done, its 5 foot deep. got a liner with a bottom drain witch is 4inch
a must ,this saves you having hoover leaves an crap out,go's staright in to bottom feed filter, massive uv unit and a big air pump for the 4foot stergion. i have lota money in fish but mosta them i had over ten years

my advise would be go have a chat with local koi place .buy a koi mag, dont buy cheap stuff ,also you need test water alot ,i test water every week in mine .
i would of liked it bigger but i did consevatory plans before pond
i built it me self the blocks were filled up with concrete for strength.

koi are my main hobbie fords are second they all hand feed ,nothing better
than setting with beer watchn them

it did have 30 koi in to start with till i found new homes for them
only 10 the best an biggest. stil to many but couldnt part with them
got all the stones for round trees ect from river saved a fortune ,also
got mosta the trees plants from pond i build me sister as she moved house
her pond was in koi carp magazine last year ,hope to get mine in now
it garden sorted

sold mosta the koi to fund build

right after a lot of thought im going to build something a little like this, but deeper and have lilly's around the sides, the depth in the middle will be about 4 1/2 ft, around the edge about 12" for the plants.

The dirt garden wont be there either, just shale and stone.

I will be taking most of the summer to do this so dont expect picture for a good while!

go down to A5 aquatics, it cant be far from you if you live in nuneaton, they advised us on what pumps and stuff to use and how much space is needed for koi, our pond is about 6 foot deep, 8 wide and 10 long nice wall around it to sit on

I have been down A5 aquatics and youre correct they are about 2 mile from me, infact i have bought all my aquarium fish from there.
I have sourced pumps and filters and have done a bit of reading up on koi, i am only having maybe 3 but a few other smaller fish aswell.
The size of the pond for now will be roughly 9ft x 6ft x 4.5ft deep with a waterfall at one end as a feature.

If this one goes ok then maybe next year i will biuld another pond on the other side of the garden and join the two up, with a bridge over the channel between them, ambitious or what??
