loudness is directly proportional to amplitude
i.e L α a

Wheras intensity is prototional to the square of the amplitude
i.e I α a˛

1) L= ka ------> therefore a=L/k
2) I = ka˛
Substituting a in 1) into 2) we get
I = k (L/k)˛
I = k * (L˛ / k˛)
I = L˛ / k
So this means that intensity is inversly proportional the the square of the loudness i. e. I α 1/L˛

α - proportionality sign
k- constant ( inserted to get rid of the proportionality sign)

Hope this helps!

copy+paste FTW!
i totally understand what you mean now so i/a *k (i/kl). . .

in 1 side out the other comes to mind

i just got an A in gcse maths aswell

thanks jim but no thanks

i will take your word on it

you need to check if they are testing on frequency as well, on our rallying our car only get tested at static, and a decent exhaust will pass no worries, but then listen to an old mk2 escort at 10,000rpm on throttle bodies and see what is the loudest between that and a turbo car on full boost. - really gets me, but i run decent exhausts, but cannot run ALS on most stage events.

static test is totally different from driveby, if you think youre only kicking out 98db on full chat you're mistaken... lol

but the microphone is set back away from the track, so a lot of the sound has dicipated by then.

if the mic is closer to the track at donno than say bedford, that might explain a bit of the difference maybe?

where are the mics at donno?

Yeah, that will help INDUCTION noise wont it.

Am I going to have to start a new thread with the same title, just to get replies that are on topics?

I dont care about exhaust noise, I know how to stop it and roughly the amount of silencing needed to get it under the limits.

Hence why in the title of the thread, I say INDUCTION noise

steve thats sort of been covered too, fit inside of a box is about the only way, i guess you could fit a sliencer of sorts a little like a exhaust one and test that idea

i doubt the induction is louder than 98db though honestly

also how can you tell if the induction IS louder generally

would need to change both exhaust AND induction,,,, a few times to get the same frequency

changing the induction could make the exhaust louder OR quieter and vice versa

NO it hasnt been covered ginge Not in the slightest, despite asking this clear as day and this thread now well in to its 2nd page

I want to know what turbo cars have, in the owners or marshalls eyes, been black flagged due to induction noise, not exhaust noise.
I have heard a fair few big power cossies say this now, jus not sure which n not sure what sorta spec.

Im suprised it can be over the db limit too, but seems it is, so I want to know which cars/setups.

Id rather have no replies than tons of off topic ones.

changing the induction isn't gonna make the exhaust louder or vice versa....it's gonna make it more audible

so none of the noise you could hear could have been coming out of the exhaust could it?

steve UNLESS people have tested this,,,, which considering 8 days ago HOW MANY CARS WHERE KICKED OFF TRACK BLAMING THE INDUCTION

im quite sure not many people have got round to testing it,,,, mike was kicked off track with hes exhaust but its the first time he has also

so i DOUBT anyone know the ACTUAL answer,,, otherwise the big cars wouldnt have been booted off track last sunday

BUT based on dingys car being on track with a extra silencer theres a good chance it IS the exhaust that does it is the way I look at it

having worked in a place that makes and sells exhausts and cats and heard the difference in OE stuff like BMW, Merc and then coppied one and its louder we discovered they are double skinned aswell as 2 pipes into one that seems to make them quieter

induction sounds like a excuse to me imo

NOOOOOO couldnt have been that as he had straight through 3ins system with no cat and practically a straight system to aid airflow

OH and steve hes another thought, what about the drone sound being amplified through the bonnet/wings ect like a guitar works,,,, thats ANOTHER possible reason too

Jim...please...stop being a pedantic cock and put your brain in gear:

the noise it made coming on boost was stupid, i.e. the intakenoise....

If you want to look smart go and put some decent clothes on, fix your hair, shave your arse and walk backwards from now on.

AND YOU ALREADY SEEM TO KNOW SOO MUCH that when someone tells you,,,, yoy " already know this "

SO WHATS THE FUCKING POINT OF THE THREAD,,,,,, as its CLEAR you know more than anyone else thats why you write about cars for a magazine for 15k a year

if people have been chucked off track and are talking about its induction,,, its CLEAR to ME that it aint solved the issue

well as you trying to give me jip now without me starting it, ill lower the tone...

i know what YOU are telling me, as you are a know nothing spastic from the 'hood who keeps on and on and on about bollocks to do with stard exhaust pipes when im on about induction noise.

i DONT know about the question i started the thread about, but its clear almost nobody who replied does either.

id rather wait for non-retards to come online who have looked in to this or experienced this, to get their opinions, than listen to some twatty parts boy giving it the biggun as usual.

im pretty sure MikeR, Martin, and a few others did have this problem. but I dont know.

Originally Posted by Ginge !

you are pointing out more parts department exhaust pipe bollocks totally irrelivant to this thread.
i dont know where you work, or care, but as you ALWAYS bring up shit about the standard replacment parts "we" sell, i presume you are a parts dept monkey. although now no doubt you will post yet again to explain what you do and how great it is, not like i want to know.

im interested in turbo car induction noise, fuck all else, if you know nowt about it, go write shite on another thread. and that not jus aimed at you ginge.

I don't know the answer but i can understand what steve is asking - not hard really is it

I've also heard people say that they've triggered the meters with the induction side, how they tell i don't know.

my xr2 could not run at bedford due to its induction noise when coming on boost.

32psi and group A filter the car had and it tripped their drive by mics. all that way for 4 laps

yes, you are saying that the noise of air being sucked into the engine is tripping 100db driveby noise meters

and you don't see the problem with that comment?

i would politely request that you drop the childish smacktalk and insults

now, what IS induction. it's the act of the air entering the engine.

what do you think it means?

Since Chip has wound in the childish bickering and is now just putting his good points accross , Jim has taken over, just without any knowlege of what he is on about

But still more than Ginge, and with no mention of part departments, council estates, or gangsta mates either
