MK1 Martin my mate has an XR4i,

Eveyone he knows of has written them off when they have had them.

He wants to know what is the best way of sorting the wallowing out.

What sort of drop or what shocks, spings etc etc

Many thanks

don't fit cossie stuff to the front end, the wieght of the big boat anchor means it's even worse handling on the front end

fit the 2wd stuff to the front end as far as all the suspensin mods go if you swap over the hubs etc but use proper V6 springs to go with it

on the rear you could always go with the complete cossie rear end but you'll have the wider arb which means you would need early 3 door wishbones to match up

the rear isn't as important as the front though in my onion as the 4i's are way to understeery when you push on

xr4x4 rear end for lsd and disk brakes and arb, some poly bushes all round, and a spax or koni setup are the basics

its the same with cossies, you'll want proper beams etc. etc. to make em go round corners.

whats the budget? and has all the worn bushes etc. been replaced?

arb won't fit on the 4i as it's wider than the later cars

front end sorted first, then concentrate on the rear where the money is
the rears just want for the beam and diff mounts to be poly'd

at the front everything needs to be poly'd plus he'll need to get hold of a 24V front arb as it's 29mm and 2wd, the cossie stuff tends to be a bit of a mismatch as no one knows which one it's off of so the 24V is the easiest option

Not sure what his budget is atm, and no bushes have been replaced as far as i am aware. The car has only done around 80k and only 81 mile in the last 12 months.

I fitted the complete rear axle from an xr4x4 to one of the 4i's I had and and it went straight on, the only thing I forgot was that the rear shocks are different because of the lower bushes.

There is 1/2" difference in width of lower shock mounts, but cut off 1/4" each side all good.
4i(mk1) and 3 door cossie arb same shape, 4i one 10mm cossie one 14mm.
On my xr4i I used 2wd sapphy std ride height springs(avo's) all round but put a 1 1/4" preload on the front under the springs, it was ace, on the rear I used escos beam bushes with a GGR axle tightening kit, I find them better than the poly bushes by a long way, everything else usuall stuff poly.
Eventually I grafted a 2wd sapph cos arb on the back, just a case of a little welding of brackets to arm, and shell but easy.
I used a 3 door cossie front arb, as I like these much better but it is twitchier with it grips better though, I used group n strut top mounts as well, with 3 door hubs at front.
Shocks were SPAX and worked VERY well.
