With all the car thefts on here recently its got me seriously thinking about upgrading the security of my garage.
What can you do to upgrade garage security??
In my eyes garages hide the car from prying eyes but also hide crooks once they are inside and doors down to a night of unrestricted access to your motor.
Also theres a fine balance between too much security meaning you become a target on the grounds of "you must have something worth nicking" to having too little and being vulnerable.
So what security devices can you add to your garage??? and the car when in the garage??
Im thinking theres several areas to cover:
The door
Preventing removal of car once they get past the door.
Alarm systems.
Additional car immobilisation especially for a garage. (im thinking removing essential componants on top of usual car security).
Ultimately i realise you wont stop the professionals as they will just enter the house and rob you at gun point for the keys from your bedside
but its the chavs and opportinists i want to stop.
Any ideas??

i got alarm linked to house system, mororised door (harder to open by hand),wireless camera, and my favourite a baby monitor (no pun intended) they are dirt cheap very sensitive and you can hav cctv ones if you want.

Another idea...i have just bought a gps tracker for my car,It alerts you by text if your car is moved or goes out of a predetermined area, wires cut, unit turned off, ignition turned on without turning unit off etc It is Gps so sends you coordinates to view on google earth or autoroute. If your car is stolen,in theory you could follow it by texting the unit, get gps coordinates and have laptop in car following it with google earth
I bought one as my lockup is a couple of miles away,so can check on it at any time, although if moved it texts me.I had one of these on my old car and as a test i pushed my car out of lockup without turning the text alert off,my phone got a text alerting me before car was out of lockup

Mine just sits in a lock-up garage with an alarm attached to the door, Cat 1 alarm on the car, big car-cover which is a nightmare to remove with the door closed, a Disc-Lok and a nice, big wheel clamp with the steering turned to the left so you cannot even drag it out the garage.
The cars outside sit with Disc-Loks on, Cat 1 alarms and two big 500W floodlights aiming on them if anyone comes on the driveway.
The only car that does not is the CinqueCento which sits down the road (normally unlocked with a rear window open a little) as nobody in their right mind would want a 900cc Fiat

I like the baby monitor!!!!!
I want to fit a camera that overlooks the garage door but i suspect that would attract yobs who would target the camera for a bit of bashing.

i have my house alarm on the garage and always make sure theres a car parked in front if no-one is home or at night but must confess it sits in the garage unlocked, will have to start locking it as alot of these cars are being stolen from my area, i wonder if its connected with it being half term teenagers with nothing better to do roaming the streets, parents dont give a shit etc.
It really depends on which way you want to go. Do you want to just scare them off or actually catch them in the act?
To scare them off, you cant beat a few different alarms both on the garage door and motion detectors once inside. A security post is a good one, but it must be on the inside of the garge door really, so it dosnt draw attention.
If you want to catch them in the act, then use a security light that sounds an alarm inside the house. Best to take the bulb out the light so they dont even think that your on to them and carry on as normal whilst you have time to get dressed and grab your weapon of choice.

LOL pete!! Im not in any more so id have to get hold of blackmarket guns anyway and knowing my luck id end up on "polce camera action" buying guns off and undercover cop
I was thinking you can still get the traps that use shotgun blanks and i reckon one of them adapted for the door would scare shit out of and burst eardrums of any thief!!
The antilag gave me ringing ears when i set it off in garage trying to get a flame video so shotgun blank cartridge should be proper loud!!!

i had the garage broken into they took two crusty old alloys but left me with the 3t trolley jack and the socket set???? i now turn the wheel full lock, dvla clamp through towing eye so if moved will be noisey 2x hasp and staples outside and a shitty pir allarm from b and q inside. cctv and tex tracker id the way forward i think.
At my old house (where my saff was) i used to park my mums 405 infront of the garage door, then my daily runner behind hers (both alarmed) so they'd have to move 2 alarmed cars before they got in the garage, then had meaty posts behind the garage door (3 of em) and i'd usually take a wheel off and put it in my room. sounds ridiculous but it works
since i've got my new house ive had some problems.... not got the saff anymore but still got the track slag out front (no garage) had one car keyed, one car egged and another (shitter) nicked. frickin TOP area aswell.... just had bad luck i guess. since that i've put up night vis CCTV on the chimney facing all directions, hooked to a DVD recorder. got a good picture of a lad chucking eggs on my car, luckily i ran into him one evening (dark alleyway) and sorted it. Never had probs since, CCTV in a subtle place is a good buy

im lucky that even a van cant get to my garage so no chance of them towing it out. Problem with CCTV is garage door is on perimeter of the property so external CCTV cant reallt be hidden but internal can.

Thats one thing that worrys me is if i go far enough with security to stop them nicking it, i do worry that the type of scum these days might trash the car totally or torch it in the garage just because i "dared" to stop them stealing something they wanted or caused them hassle with extra security. Not good when garage is attached to house as i dont want to burn cos of it!! Plus you risk them targetting you in the future out of spite.
Hence its a delicate balance to achieve annonymity and protect your property.
I'd get internal DEFFO!! with dvd recorder your sorted!
Plus, speak to neighbours an that over the road, with the price of cameras you could put one on their property looking at yours, and another on looking at theirs for them ;D

Problem is some people just cant cope with thier jealousy though and have to vandalise and attack nice stuff rather than work for it. Probably nicked the shitter just to spite you then dumped and burned somewhere.

Totally get what you mean, my old garage (where saff was) was wooden doors (made myself) but were inch thick, and backed up with steel behind all round. i try to make things look very 'casual' but be VERY strong if anyting gets tried on.
PS The stolen shitter got rolled through a wall. BEST thing about stuff like this is: they have to name their address in court, very useful

what would be perfect would be a PIR triggered camera system that turned TV over to the CCTV channel when some one gets near the garage so i can see how often people "take a peak" or scout the area. The garage door is a back alley and being end of terrace with no access my end of row, no one has any need to come near garage door except me so anyone doing so would obviously be a scum bag.

Seriously? Thats cheap as FOOK to do!!
I have it front and rear of my pad (fields all round u see) and the telly just flick over to the camera where someone is, or makes a beep if you dont wanna miss corrie

Dead handy though, its like you can sneak up on scallys, which is obviously fun.....

But yeah especially these days it seems a lot of criminals bear grudges if they cant get what they want. I notice pikeys always seem to take it personal and the last thing i need is a vendetta by scum but then i dont want to loose my property either!!
Maybe im being paranoid or maybe its just where i live but theres been several cases of thieves returning several times with more people/equipment and seemingly an "arms race" between criminals tooling up and home owner upgrading security/police assistance!!

then when i had nothing left they could nick (moved stuff home!) and i still went after them, they started targetting student friends attacking 3 of them, burning a car, acid on another car and suspected attempted arson on the student hall meaning i was asked to leave!!!
yes but dangerous!! I had a bad experience when i lived in london where i obviously went to war on the wrong criminals and ended up having to leave my student digs 2 months before end of year because of repeated burglarys and me stealing back my bike

Apparently, from what i've heard, a pump action 12 guage with blanks is quite the deterrent, but thats from what ive heard round my way, just rumours of course
you need to catch em for that though

It was within the rules as my actions were indirectly putting other people "at risk" despite the fact i did nothing wrong and other people did the dangerous stuff!!!!
Like the shotgun idea!! I wouldnt use blanks
just make sure you only go for a limb shot
especiall if its pikeys as they tend to look after thier own injured
and how many other criminals would admit "i got shot robbing someones house"
I would like to install a 10ft metal pole (10 ft so no one can reach it without a ladder!!) on the back perimiter so i can mount a camera to overlook the garage door and one to overlook the back lane but im not sure if doing so would attract more criminals/vandals than it deters!! The garage roof is only just over 7ft high so any camera mounted on the edge looking at door would be easily reachable by scum.

Given a choice i wouldn't use blanks, and i wouldnt aim for limbs either, trust!
Lucky i've never pulled trigger (even if it is blanks i know fuzz will be round in seconds with there pony MP5's and i'll get shot
) i think a big blokey with a pump is enough deterrent ;DLike the idea of a big pole, but like you say it might attract nobs rather than opposite. I was quite proud of my infra-red cams on the chimney, never had any grief at them

The chimneys "out of sight" really. only those looking for cameras to avoid would see them!!
Seen a couple ofstyled lanterns with "built in" cameras which would not be noticed as anything other than a lamp by nobs, but then proper crims would wise to it and it would be in reach again.

CCTV is a waste of time imo. Unless your garage is not visible from a window or such so it triggers it on a screen to see if its really someone there. CCTV wont really see who it is anyway, and even if it does it may not get a conviction.
the best alarm/immobiliser and in some cases Theif catcher is this cool device, it's manufactured by mother nature, freely available, it has other features too..
keep it in your garage look after it and it will serve you well:-

Mans best friend, unless your a robbing dogsack climbing onto his property!
our garage is about 15 or 20metres from our house with no windows so cant really leave our dogs in there all night lol we do have a garage defender on the outside which im personally a big fan of - ive really tried hard to break into my own garage but cant get past it lol! plus various security once on the inside.
