Been with T-Mobile for near 10yrs now, since they were one2one, and am seriously thinking about switching to another carrier - mainlly cos I want the new iPhone and as of yet, there doesn't seem to be a way to successfully unlock the sim restrictions to use a different carriers sim. Which sucks cos I'd love to use one with my T-Mobile sim as I get all the minutes/texts and free web access (3G) I want and it costs less per month than o2

I signed into another 18mth contract with them recently, not due to run out till Oct 09 - so whats the deal if I wanna cancel? Whats it gonna cost?

Just spoke to T-Mobile as they hold contract for iPhone in Germany, and the guys emailed their head office to see if anyone can find out if a german sourced iphone (tied to T-Mobile) will accept UK sims and register over here, and he also reckons the Carphone Warehouse can unlock them for all networks, obviosuly cost more to buy that way - but I'm not too sure about that as otherwise it'd be all over the net....

But he says it'd be a £350 cancellation fee to cancel my contract before it's up for renewal in Oct 2009!!!! That said, cancellation fee of £350, or if I let the contract run till end it's £405, so would still be cheaper to cancel

yeah but that £350 cancellation fee you have to find all in one go. £405 if you let the contract run is split ocer 14 months.

Yeah I thought of that, but then I'd be paying near £60 a month in line rental, almost half of which on a phone I wouldn't be using....

This is what is SO annoying about the iPhone being tied to only on UK provider. I honestly don't understand it. Apple would make MORE money by porting it onto all 4 major UK providers, so why limit to just one?

I honestly don't want to leave T-Mobile either - in the last 10yrs (8 on contract) with them I've never had any problems - no real problems with coverage, no problems with support or customer service, no problems with products, etc etc. And it's cheaper per month with them for a LESSER tariff from o2!!!

I emailed the guy there.... Problem is, previous sim adapters haven't been great. Turbosim and Yessim have both had success, but been sketchy at best. Many reports of them only working as little only a couple days before packing up and refusing to connect to service

So buying an iPhone for hundreds and hundreds (these fucking things sell for between £300 and £600, sometimes more ) for it to only work for even a few months makes for a fucking expensive iPod Touch

if you do get anotther contract you can down grade your t-mobile tariff to the lowest tariff, meaning you'll pay a lot less over the 14 months

Because the tariff I am on with T-Mobile isn't available anymore and I don't want to lose it. I want to use an iPhone on this tariff is the long and short of it. I pay £25 a month for £60 of usage from my phone - no limit on calls, texts etc other than total usage costs are within £60 - which they 99% of the time are. Then I get Web n Walk for another £7.50, totalling £32.50 a month. The closest match to that from o2 is £35 amonth (600mins, 500texts, plus free mobile data) However, by not taking a "hard upgrade" (ie, upgrading to a new phone) I get a £10 a month line rental discount, dropping my monthly bill to £22.50. £22.50 x 18 = £405, whereas £35 x 18 = £630.

So, to work out total expenditure, if I was to cancel my T-Mobile contract, and take out a new one with o2 + pay £100 for the iPhone, I'd be looking at £450 (£350 to cancel T-Mombile + £100 iPhone) and another £225 over the course of the contract term, totalling £675 in extra charges.

So, to sum up, all I have to do is get an iPhone, from somewhere like Greece or Italy (where local laws dictate all phones must be sold unlocked to be used on any network) for less that £675 and I'm all set For this year the price will be the same as if I am had cancelled T-Mobile, signed to o2 and bought the iPhone, but after this year, I'm on a winner....

Only thing is, I have to find a) a proper Apple unlocked iPhone, and b) £675
