Default Pacemakers/Beta Blockers

Is there anyone here had/on any of the above….do they both do opposite things like the pacemaker makes your heart beat properly but the betablockers slow your heart rate down??

Sorry if I sound stupid….or if this doesn’t make sense, but I just cant get my head around the above and just need it clarifying if someone could

Pacemaker keeps your heart ticking at the right pace....stops it fluctuating I think....betablockers inhibit your metabolism as well I think

Not exactly sure but i think beta blockers block the release of the chemical that gives you that adrenaline feeling (buterflies / anxiety / nervousness) which can speed your heart rate up, and so helps calms you down. It sort of counteracts the bodies natural fight or flight reaction.

I might be totally wrong tho.

so say that your heart beats at 45 beats a min and should be 60+ and the likes of stress etc cause your heart to drop below 45 which in turn tells your brain to shut your body down, the beta blockers would stop this messgae being sent? And the pacemaker would keep the heart beating at the correct bpm?

my best friend is in hospital on beta blockers at the mo
he went to his doctors two weeks ago with a bad chest, was admitted straight to hospital, where his pulse was 220 beat per minute!
today they are going to try and stop his heart then restart it, to see if that works
if it dont, he'll have a combined pace maker defibrillator fitted next week!
he's 29

Sounds a lot like this…my sister (31) has suffered from “faints” for years she was diagnosed with epilepsy originally which we all knew it wasn’t….eventually she was diagnosed with syncope….she had some tests done and has been put on medication a year or so ago, she has recently moved to dubai and has had a few episode’s over there, the most recent while I was there on holiday which is the worst I have seen she stoped breathing and her lips turned blue, luckily she did start breathing again. Due to this she did some digging and has found a specialist in dubai, she went to see him the other day and has been told she needs to go in to have a pacemaker and also be given beta blockers to save her from another fall which she may not wake up from, he is admitting her to hospital to keep his eye on her while all this is going on.
I’m struggling to get my head around it all, and I think me bombarding her with questions wont help as she is not dealing with it very well and I just have soo many questions about it….

As above I thought beta blockers did the opposite to a pacemaker but obviously I was wrong…

hi,she could be fainting because of a low pulse rate/blood pressure or an erxtremely fast rate (at times due to arrythymia) where the blood is not being pumped around properly, the pacemaker will speed up the heart to keep it stable and at the correct speed.Beta blockers slow the heart down.

An athelete can have as low as 30bpm at rest,so 45 at rest is not stupidly low but as a normal person should be around 60bpm hence the pacemaker.

They originally said it was low blood pressure - the meds she is on keeps it high the majority of the time, but these meds arent working....and i cant see why if the faints are just related to low blood pressure.....i just dont get it all

low pressure is due to an inadequate pump or very thin blood.

In theory if her resting rate is as you say 45bpm at rest constantly, could be a heart valve problem, heart disease the specialist will find the problem.

(of course low pressure could be the result of medications, kidney diesease/dehydration,diabetes etc also)

Great news Gareth,a 220bpm at rest must be an awful feeling. Its amazing how you can reset the heart, onwards and upwards now, keep on beta blockers and maybe he wont experience that again.Arrithmyas can be bad news,i bloke who i knew at school brothers dropped down dead with it at 15 years old very healthy bloke too, very rare but if it goes too fast and dont get immediate treatment its fatal.

I don't know much about beta blockers other than what was posted up above and a little bit of what someone I know has told me, but have had a heart pacemaker fitted at 20 (14 years ago).

Mine was fitted due to a problem with my heart not sending the electrical pulse all the time meaning my heart rate dropped to about 15-20 bpm every now and then. It was causing me to have blackouts now and again. Had a 24 hour ECG test done and found the problem.

Bascially the pacemaker is set to check if a pulse signal is sent each second as set to 60bpm and if not it will send one itself to compensate. However, they can be used for a range of problems.

I hope your sister is okay, but the key thing is for them to diagnose the actual problem like you say before fitting a pacemaker.

I'm sure you'd be happy to go rather than me Graham

Hope your mates still doing ok Gareth

Little Spikey - My sister suffers from blackouts thats how it all started, just now they are getting worse, she had some more tests on sunday including blood tests and an unltra sound on her heart, it was beating at 42bpm....she's awaiting results but will be back this week some time to dicuss the pacemaker and beta blockers.....i've been able to ask her a lot more about it now she's had time to absorb it all...
