good going Euan be nice to see some video footage if you could organise it
couple of vid clips to show the extent of the acceleration of the newer litre bikes compared to fast cars

impressed by the bike, it's old and sportbike technology has advanced greatly in the last 10years.
Wanna race this?

Some more figures that are very interesting to show how quick the newer ones are..........
Unlike what many non-bikers seem to think, the R1's are not the daddy of bikes anymore like they used to be 10 years ago with little competition. There are quicker bikes out there now, although were not talking mega differences on the road as theres not many times youll actually do a 0-180.......
08' GSXR 1000 - 0-180mph in 18.51 seconds
08' ZX1400 - 0-180 in 19.77 seconds
08' Hayabusa - 0-180mph in 18.25 seconds
08' R1 - 0-180mph in 21.07 seconds
08' ZX10R - 0-180mph in 17.21 seconds!!!!!!!!
As an example, the Veyron does 0-180 in 16.4-16.7 seconds, so not 'much' quicker than a new ZX10R!
Also, that saff thats got the top speed record does 0-180mph in 17.82 (or did end of last year anyway), so your going to need similar power/performance to this to keep with the modern bikes.
Quite amazing really for stock bikes, and bear in mind that MANY of these bikes will be modified and probably have even more power and less weight too!!!

Great post this, and i as a noob here i'd like to stick my two pence worth in.........unless u have ridin a really quick bike you have absolutley no idea what fast is.....My m8 runs an old 99T Hyabusa with a power commander Yoshi can air box mod etc etc...made 186bhp at the rear wheel and i can think of no car that could out accelerate this.....and i driven some seriously quick cars...Porsche 997 Turbo...500bhp skylines etc etc....they have no fookin chance.
And big respect to Euan for calling it as it is.....Top Job M8

I was quite pleased with how it went thats all that matters!
My car is the fastest I have been in or sen on the road and has proven its down the runway so either the R1 I raced was tuned or there are tons of faster cossies out there than mine?

Motorbikes are known for acceleration not top speed, what's the big deal here?!
Neighbours motorbike would piss my M3 on acceleration up to 100mph I bet, but the top speed is about 40/50 mph less.

ive race a few r6's now ( and they were trying as thats why we went to the motorway)
r6's 30-160 i used to be able to beat them, and most other 600's i have aswell sv650 and a few others.
had a go with a r1 and brand new fireblade just before i took it off the road, fook me what a waste of fuel that was
i was amazed how much of a difference in performance there was between a r6 and a r1.

Also bear in mind that when bikes are involved its really down to the rider, both ability and balls. In a car you just stick ya foot down and away you so doesnt take much effort, on a bike theres loads more to think about, mainly keeping the front down and finding the right balance.
Always good to see fast cars go against bikes though. I suppose bikes are just benchmarks really for modified/fast cars, so if you do well against one, you know you have a quick car.

Im not saying its easy at all mate, but just saying that its harder to get the most out of a fast bike, than it is getting the most from a fast car thats all. nd obviously more difficult to ride a quick bike closer to its limits than it is a quick car. Also you have to be much more aware on a bike, especially on the road, with much more to think about, mainly trying to ride quick but 'safe'.
Just found this excellent video, R1 v's R6, the R1 really struggles to get away from the R6. Excellent riding by both though, especially the R6 rider.

unless you've got something mental car you probably have no chance of beating the new top bikes but bikes can definately be beaten and I'm always on the look out for bikes to try and race....
I've recently raced and beaten a zx6-r and a zx9-r, the zx9 was just the other day, had a mate with me in my car we went a couple of times. I think I was luck as when we started I dropped to 3rd and was pretty much instantly on boost, he was properly on it, tucked in behind but we started gappping him quite nicely, went from a slower speed off a large round about ( I was behind) and I would have hit him if I hadnt kept backing off.
Also watched one of my mates in his 450bhp rwd saff race and beat a blade (this was probably 5 years ago). Kept with him until probably 170 ish then the bike pulled out the way and he went past.

not saying bikes are unbeatable, but just for example purposes
ZX9R B1 model - 124hp / 220kgs = 563bhp/ton
ZX9R F2 model - 148hp / 186kgs = 795bhp/ton
just some food for thought when people start quoting bike models, the 1st incarnation was the very 1st ZX9R that kawasaki brought out, in its day in 1993 was very fast, the latter was the last ZX9R produced in 2003, was a massive improvement, but never was enought to catch the litre perfromers, i have owned both, still nothing like todays pocket rockets.

thing is though you are comparing tuned cars to standard bikes if this is how you want to compare them with a mate as in my 500bhp cos is faster than your standard r1 but realy comparing whitch one is quicker as in is a bike quicker than a car there isnt realy much comparison
holeshot racing have a 790bhp road leagle busa that would iniolate a tuned car in almost any guise
but a 4x4 tuned cos should beat a bike through the twisties

Dont forget you really have to add the weight of the rider and a bit for fuel and fluids, so about 100kg on top of the dry weight figures in reality.
Still, my 750 is 148 bhp standard and weighs 163kg dry, so that works out that the actual bike has 908bhp per ton. Obviously it cant ride itself though so add 100kg as mentioned for the rider and fluids, and it still works out at 563bhp per ton. And my bike is probably closer to 160bhp with the mods and id say 5kg lighter at least, so probably over 600bhp per ton in reality.
The newer 1000's are probably over 660bhp/ton including riders weight and fluids etc.
I know theres more variables than just power/weight but it would have to be a very light cossie, or a VERY powerful one to be evenly matched all the way through if both are ridden/driven to the limits.

Markk, oh yeah, I agree a brand new 1000+cc would make most cossie look silly. Still worth a go though Must say I dont know enough about bikes to know which model ZX9 it was, very unlikely to have been a brand new one I guess. One thing I would say though re. the power to weight is most 'average bikers' these days probably way 90/100kgs, which brings the first bikes bhp per ton down to 386 from 563...
Jacko,
there's only really any point comparing standard or mildy tuned bikes against quite heavily tuned cossies as thats how most bikes/cossies are. I'm sure there are fast tuned bikes but then you might as well go get a drag car... The majority of bikes you see on the road havent been tuned or if they have, only mildy but most cossies have hence the point comparing them in those guises....

Fair play Euan.
in 2005,
My Fiecos, @ about 440 bhp, dog box, 1250kg's, 2 passengers, all on a summers night about 9 pm.
- would beat by a fair bit, a 'New' 05 ZX6 R kwacker (the new up lift model of the time), from 30 to 170mph, done many back to back races with the bloke., also done races at low boost (400 bhp, and still quite in front at the end)
- slightly faster than a gsxr 750 bubble back, 60 - 150 (raced once, upto a round about)
- but slightly slower than my 'old mans' 05 R1, from 30 - 100mph (racing round a local ind est between 2 round abouts).

Always worth a try euan
I would absolutely love to race a big powered cossie on my r6 just to see
Im only a new rider on a split new bike so straight line only for me
Now i have my bike i feel its so much better fun, faster, cheaper, and better looking than my old saff
No doubt i loved that car to bits but biking is AWSOME, my new r6 is mind blowing, 133bhp standard, this is obviously no where near as fast as the bigger litre plus bikes but its so light and agile, and as that video shows the r1 on track has a good race on his tail
Get a big bike euan, you no you want too

looks like you get the first one off the line then its starts to catch you?
Second one looks evens.
In all fairness I should really be in 2nd gear when Im going up gains the bike but it wont grip so I use 3rd.

Agree fully
I had a play with an F430 on sunday for a few miles, my V-twin 650 vs F430, I stayed on his bumper throughout the play as we rarely hit the 90's, But I know full well that had they guy 'given it some' then he would have waved bye bye to me,
So does that mean my bike is as fast as a Ferrari

The diffrence in lap times at the recent BSB at Oulton between the top R1 and the top R6 is under 2 seconds a lap,
and stock bikes 3 seconds a lap.
