what year was the R1, bike performace has changed so much in the last 8 years its scary.
Ive always said it takes a very fast car to stay with a bike under accelleration and from a standing start, ive driven 500+hp cosworths and they are not fast enough , as you have proven here - well done for admitting it !

Didnt you race awhile back with a R1 too? Or was that a R6?

Just today I took out a mate of mine whos got a 600cc bike and is proper into bikes (and whos never been in a Cossie) went out in mine today. My Cossie is a strong stage 3 (dyno'd 370+bhp) and he admitted once rolling there would be nothing in it.

But he also mentioned a R1 would totally destroy me, so wondered what kind of power cossie it would take to do one!

Raced a GSX-R (couldnt tell if it was a 750cc or 1000cc) recently and it shot past me at 130ish when I was pulling hard
(private raod of course)

Taught me a lesson about bikes.

Si I have race my other mate (toff off here) on his R6 and there was nothing it it acceleration until 130 ish where again my cossie is faster and my car has over 500 bhp so your 370 must be more or the 600 isnt flat out.

The R1 was so much quicker than the R6.

so it was an old bike, i know im into my bike as well as my cars but if you put that R1, next to the 2008 R1 and the same person riding both, the new one would leave it like it has hit the brakes - and that is no bull either - it frightens me how i used to think my old bikes were fookin quick, till i started riding new ones,
so just think if you up against a bike over the litre series to 190mph, as this is where the hyper bikes shine really well, the ZX12R, GSXR1300, ZZR1400 - i love them all

the power did not change alot, the power delivery did, but the most important thing that the bike manufacturers did was the weight loss, as much as 30kgs on some, that only weighed 200kgs in the early days
thats the equivilant of losing just over a 1/4 ton of your cossie if you put it on a diet !

i do love the bike v car debates.

I seam to remember offering a certain Mr Tarry a modified bike v modified car race for charity a while back, but i think the cossie broke down
the bike in question has since gone even faster, and is till going strong !

it really is hard to expalin to people and to make them understand just how fast the big bikes are, yes they are slower round the twisties, but they will stay with the smaller thou pocket rockets in a straight line because of theyre longer whell base, so much easier to use the power.
My last 12 had 175rwhp at 9750rpm was an awsome ride - being a larger bloke this size machine suited me,

What charity are you involved with because my wife & I are heavily involved in our own charity work & would only get involved with those causes, certainly would not get involved with a charity race under the circumstances you describe.
Only time a bike was featured with my car was in a French mag, when both participants failed to set times.

you must remember this from the last time Rod ?

i like to support the cancer charities for my own personel reasons, so what about a passionford whip round, all donate, and we split the proceeds and give to our chosen charities, you cover your costs and we cover ours somewhere ?
I was serious last time, we are all petrol heads, and the mags never seam to do a true representation of road modified car v road modified bike, i thik it was when your engine gave up a couple of years ago ?

It does take a second to come to full boost even well into the boost threshold so i does have a small effect.

I never do 0-60 etc in my car as it has zero traction until 3rd gear.

Yes the bike in your pic is an old R1. Although its a good acheivment, there is a massive difference is all round performance on the newer ones, in fact any of the newer models.

Some official figures for you mate.........

99'/00' R1 (like the V reg pictured) - 150bhp(fwp) 10.3/10.4 @ 143mph, 0-1000m - 18.6 @171mph.

00'/01' GSXR 1000 - 10.1 @ 141mph

01' R6 - 10.8 quarter.

Impressive times for older stock bikes. Bear in mind that most of these are now old and may very well be in need of a tune up, although some will also be modified.

The newer R1's actually have 30 bhp more (180 bhp), 10% more torque, and are 5kg lighter, not to mention the MASSIVE improvements in the chassis, handling and have FAR better brakes than the older models.

so maybe a smaller turbo car would have better chance with the acceleration aspect. but then again a smaller turb will run out of puff and the bike will win top end aswell

The old ones do still have good brakes mate compared to a car with good brakes, but the brakes on new bikes these days are bloody awesome! One of the reasons i love my 06 gixer 750, the brakes are amazing which is where i can gain ground over other, more powerful bikes.

Only car that i have realy seen go well against bikes on the 1/4 is Kev Sharps old escort and Calders Supra.
Have als seen Kev go against a bike on the motorway and kept with it through the gears, but he was running his FFD box then.

Euan - good stuff - Bet it was a fun race! U call it straight as always. All people can say is what happened on the day. No doubt a turbo Busa would annihilate u all ways. You can see them at the Texas mile doing over 230mph. However there is no reason for people to defend cars or bikes. Different modes of transport, both can be made to go very quick. Petrol heads love both!!!

As said, I ran up against a fast bike the other day. At 160mph+ he was quite a few hundred meters away and still pulling away - estimate he would be reading 180+. Mad fun

rapidcossie, do you have 1/4 figures with terminal speeds and 0-1000m times for your mate? Would be interested to compare with the above figures.

Always interesting to see quick cars go up against bikes, but as said somewhere above, would be good to see mega modified cars go up against mega modified bikes to see the outcome. Would probably come down to who has the biggest balls no doubt!

R1's are seriously quick, would take one hell of a cossie to beat one from a very low speed.

Didnt Mike Rainbum do a Cossie VS Bike race at Brunters when he had his saph?

i think a cossie like Kev Sharps old EsCos vs an R1 would be intresting!

The carbed R1s you are talking about usually make a genuine 137-140 bhp at the rear wheel with a pipe and re jet.

I have a TD04 sat on the shelf that will be fitted when i get back from the IOM in sept.

Bhp will be 215-230. Cost of conversion will be a couple of hundred quid to me as i can do all the fabrication.

I will be more than happy to attend any car/bike race!

I've had quick bikes, I've had quick cars too !!

I had an 02 plate R1, carb'd, newer shape to the one pictured & after that a K4 Gixxer thou with Power Comander, K&N & a Yoshi can, 158hp @ the wheel & the thing was QUICK !!

My Cossie's about 500hp, I had a play wit a 1000RR Blade through Box Hill on way home from Comunity Service couple weeks ago, went from top end of 2nd through to bout 5 1/2k in 5th !!

I got beat !!

But not by as much as I thought, he pulled prob bout 3/4 car lengths on me but once above the ton twenty mark he didn't go anywhere really noticable.

We stopped in the Texaco garage & he said to me he was flat out & impressed wit the "old" cossie as it was the quickest CAR he had raced !! Was well impressed !!

Hopefully gettin a K5 Gixxer thou soon, you can't beat a bike !!

ive owned a 500 bhp + saff 2wd which was awsome,it accelerated from 100+ like a fast car does 0-60 imo..it was on t4 and msd mapped it ,fastest car ive been in ever ..and ive driven ,been in lots.... i also have owned a carb model r1 which was stupid quick but unless you are very good rider ,i mean can hold it at high speed round bends etc .then car will win ......... i can ride but put me in the 500bhp saff i would be quicker than my r1 ... i think the bike would just edge it with good rider on ,but those are few and far between ... i wouldnt like to race a cossie on a bike .....scary as fook imo ...cheers jeff
