Default TiAL/Garrett V-band turbos- Anyone had dealings with em?

As title really, just out of interest like.

These ones...
http://www.tialsport.com/prod%20ss%20turbo.html#sgt2528

Same as how WRC turbos etc are these days, with a V-band exhaust to manifold join, rather than a 4 bolt flange.

Just wondered if they any good, it says they much lighter, says the housings are much smaller, etc etc.

Wondered if it affects spoolup compared to conventional divided/undivided flanges.

Wondered if the housing can take the heat fine, as its stainless, though cast stainless.

It doesnt give much info on em, and no experience of em, so just wondered what they like...

They blow when cold, as I have a V-band connecting the down pipe to the turbo, and it doesn't seal properly until hot.

Out of the ones ive had anything to do with we've had "no problems", including not experiencing the blow that mike mentions but then I tend not to try and make boost from cold, but none of them have been high milage cars, never made a direct back to back comparison on the same turbo for spool up.

So im afraid im of little use and will fuck off now, lol

I've found exactly this as well, usually its where the clamp doesnt quite join where it blows.

Also if you overtighten the clamp to try and reduce the blowing the bolt bends so its a twat to remove once you need to and/or shears completely - they could really do with using bigger bolts than M4 for that kind of thing.

I've seen a couple of videos on the rollers where id say the V-band between turbo and manifold didnt seal properly even when hot, as a massive flash of flame comes out between turbo and manifold as they let off at high rpm. They 2 vids ive seen that were on HKS T51Rs which are V-band turbine inlet.

My turbo has a v-band on the downpipe flange, but ill use some high temp sealant to stop that leaking, same as I will on all the joints. Job done.
Sealants around these days good for 1500degC.

Did you read my post? Why have you assumed I am "boosting" . It's the noise I can hear .

No, ive assumed you wont have significant pressure at the flange until you start opening the throttle up and hence at the time you are making boost.

IME back pressure in the manifold is low when at part throttle.

Sort of cars Im used to though, you woudlnt hear it anyway, not like your comfy sound deadened road cars, doubt Stav would notice it on his either

Nothing wrong with cast stainless Steve, the original Esc WRC manifold is cast stainless, they have been known to crack, but i'd say the problem is down to weight and harmonics rather than heat. We certainly run them at 1000 degrees without a lot of problems, the 'V' bands do suffer with leakage when cold but are overall a better solution....

They probably use them in WRC because it's easier to remove the turbo than arse about undoing bolts.. Don't assume it's in any other way 'better'..

Exactly that.
