Default Uprated Beam people"""

Right folks, need advice on this, as you know Martin aka (BUD-WEIS) had the Zoo beam fiited to the saff, now i've had it laser Aligned twice now and it's still slightly twitchy/wandering at high speeds.. doesn't give you alot of confidence in pushing the car..

My question is to you, is it the natural nature of an uprated beam to do this NO matter how it's aligned/setup?? it's just that my old 3dr on standard beam never budged..

Lastly, as you know the car rarely gets tracked, WOULD you of fitted a beam of this kind for road use, or left the standard item??

Any advice welcome...Pete..

Pete

A correctly set up beam makes the car a pleasure to drive, Let me check it when your down next. Did they give you the spec's they set it to as this could be the problem.

I personally think it might be the Quaife Diff making it a bit twitchy too.

If it helps put your mind at rest, the old standard beam had the same characteristics...the Zoo beam just improved cornering etc. As above though i reckon the diff might be the 'problem'. It'd be easy enough to sell on and get a gripper or summat else though.

My thoughts too, never even crossed my mind it could be diff related, i swear it's the beam and may need someone with better knowledge to adjust the settings, remember it has 3dr hubs too..

Hi Neil,

It did yes mate tbh, but it's been aligned with these on now so in theory it should be ok, it's better than when i took it, but still unstable at high speeds

I have only driven FWD with an ATB, I remember both feeling very stable at 130mph+.

I know my shonker feels very stable at 158mph [apart from ripping indicators out]. Thats on standard beam with Ahmed made shims, Standard hubs, then same shocks and springs as you.

Staffi my car with the standard beam has always been 100%stable in a straight line even at very high speeds 180+ but in on turn in mine feels very funny at the mo.

The front is very pointy and the back wants to come round alot.

I havent had a chance to get the tracking checked but defo unnverving going into high speed sweepers chasing pesky evos

Are the rears set to toe in or toe out? If it's out that would make the back end very livley...

Assuming thats toe in, which im sure it is as toe out is normally registered as a minus number, then im surprised you are having problems there, those settings look like a good ballpark to be in to me.

A friend got one beam, supplied and installed in his Sapphire....we trailered it home to find one of the trailing arm bolts loose. The nut had been screwed on hand tight only, just barely onto the nyloc. Wont even go into the other issues here......

Only last weekend, a local Escort with the other brand of beam....had one of the sleeves that locks the rose joint on the inner trailing arm joint fall out, and cause the arm to swing free.
Fortunately this happened at low speed entering a car park.

So I kid you not about ensuring all bolts etc are tight.

If either of these problems had come to light at high speed......serious injury, or death could have been caused.

One I know for a fact was bad "service" from that workshop, the other car had more miles on it....but still less than 1500 miles.

Either way, no way should it happen on either car, for any reason.

Staffi,
Did you watch them do the geometry? Did they slacken the front ARB bolts off before adjusting?

I had the exact same set up on my Sapphire (even down to the Quaife ATB and 3dr hubs) and my car was ROCK stable at high speed.

Something is amiss, as the settings you have quoted should be super-stable. What bushes are they (as in which manufacturer)?

is the beam lined up properly to the rest of the car?

if it's close by, stick your hands into the front and rear of the wheels and make sure that both sides are the same distance from the arches front and back

same with the fronts

if it's been set up with a little bit of error then it's going to manifest itself through the whole car so the whole setup will be on the piss, even if it's only by fractions
