Congratulations Andy, got my training starting in the next few weeks, just waiting for the provisional to come through.

Can I ask roughly how much the course cost you? I've been quoted £300 from one guy for Class C, and a few local companies said £600-£800 for Class C and a the same again to do C+E (which I'm planning on doing)

Who are you working for? Any tips or pointers?

Cheers
Si

Well done Andy....

Is it C1 or C2 you've passed... ???

Si, I got my trainig free thru the Government training scheme.. Only downside was having to go to college for 2hrs a week to get an NVQ in sucking eggs (driving, loading, etc...)
My C1 trainig is being paid for by the agency and has a two year tie-in (normal practice at most places)..

If you wanna pay for it yourself...

Prov lic = £12
Medical = £80
Theory =iirc £30ish
Lessons = anywhere from £30 - £60 PER HOUR (bank on £40)
For a rigid you usually get 20hrs (5 x 4hr stints).. For an Artic you'd usually get 8-12hrs as all you really need to learn is reversing.. You already know how to drive a large vehicle after all...
Test is about £90, but that's going up soon (if not already) to over £100, plus you need the use of the training vehicle (to take the test in) for another couple of hours (depending how far away the test centre is - I've head of drivers travelling 200 miles just to take their test)

Don't forget you DON'T need to take another madical OR theory test to do C1 after you've got a C2..

Roughly £1500 for a C2, and £400-£500 for C1

HTH's

To be honest i think you should also do the training/test in something thats loaded aswell!!
As they behave totally different when empty!!

Whilst that sounds like a good idea, I think i'd tend to disagree..

Yes they handle differently, BUT in both good and bad ways... It's alot easier to drive a 2/3 loaded truck than an empty one as the weight holds it steady... and empty truck bounces all over the shop and the steering is more vague, but a loaded truck will obviously roll more and stop slower..

IMHO.. And if you can learn to drive an empty truck slowly, then going even slower when loaded will come more naturally... !!!

So Andy, Are you gonna go C1 soon or give it a bit in the rigids..??
I can garuantee that if not already, it'll only take a week in a 23 tonner before you really wanna move to an artic.... (not that rigids are rubbish, but you'll feel ready to move up)

I've had my C2 (Cat C) for 6months now and driven loadsa different trucks with the agencies.. It becomes second nature to drive whatever you're given, and now I don't think twice about the size... They're as easy to drive as a car, so i can't wait to get in a C1 and learn summut new...

Touch wood, I should be delivering at Xmas in an Artic.... 19days and counting...

Have you got any previous driving experience..?? i.e. have you worked up from 7.5 tonner's or just gone from Car to truck...??

Only reason I ask is that if you do take a bit of time within each catagory, it gives you a chance to learn the ropes so as you move up, you haven't got too much to think about...
i.e...

The 7.5 tonners taught me everything I needed to know about paperwork, RDC procedures, parking on bays, waiting 4hrs for the paperwork.. , etc....

With this knowledge under my belt I could then concentrate on the rigids.. Using, loading and strapping techniques with curtainsiders.. Tail lifts, fridge partitions, etc.. And obviously the extra width and height

So... When I move up to a C1 (soon) I should only have to worry about the actual driving, and not where to park when I get there, or what stuff I need to take with me, blah, blah....

Hope that makes sense... ???

Chrisie....
