Default toyota mr2 - any good?

got the chance of a toyota mr2 t-bar at what seems to be a reasonable price but want a 2nd opinion really and some input from anyone in the know with these cars.....

it's a 1991 import. half leather, alloys, exhaust you could live in, the usual jap bling really....90 something thousand miles on the clock.

now the catch is it's knocking like a bitch from the bottom end but doesn't sound like a normal bottom end knock if that makes any sense? however there is a decent spare engine included in the sale so would just mean me spending a day fitting the engine and we're off.

the bloke wants around £500 for it...apparently the spare engine cost £400 quid then he lost the will to carry on with it. it's not a minter and i wouldn't expect it for that money but am i stepping on a minefield here or could i be on to something? i'm almost tempted to have it as a winter project then knock it back out start of next summer and maybe make a few quid in the process?

your thoughts and opinions very welcome.

Very reliable cars when looked after!

Here was mine.

As for your deal, 500 is alright, I bought one for bits with a Duff bottom end and 11 months MOT, the alloys on my blue one, leather in the blue one etc etc

£350

Knock him down, alot.

if it's £500 with the spare engine then i'd snap his arms off for it! thats WELL cheap. i had a 1991 MR2 UKmodel and it was fine.

just be aware of the front anti roll bar mountings, they are common for flexing and snapping. they have to be re-welded.

The engine swap should be a piss-ball - the old engine will drop out as a complete unit on subframe then all you got to do is swap it all over with the new engine.

just been had a look round it again, it's incredibly solid for a 17yr old car can't see any rust anywhere underneath looks sound. been stood a while so discs are rusted to fook, tyres are perishing a little so idealy want at least 2 tyres. been resprayed sometime rather badly so wants paint..........

i dunno...to buy to sell back on i reckon i'd make about 45p out of it so not really worth it but i see some potential in it for a project to make a nice runner and track car for not too much expence.

what are they like on running costs? mpg? do they shred tyres or anything at alarming rates?

cheers

Running costs are quite cheap. I was getting 350 miles to a tank on mine. Tyres are okay depending on your driving style. They're pretty worthless these days though. So bear that in mind as you won't sell it for much unless it's totally mint!

if it was the turbo at that price i wouldn't have had to ask for a 2nd opinion it'd be sat on the drive now

350 miles to a tank of petrol isn't too bad as thats what i'm getting from my dull as fook vectra and thats a 60 litre tank so doesn't sound like that have drinking habbits.

i've got the weekend to think it over as the guy is away now so i'll do some head scratching and see what i come up with.

I've dropped the engine out of mine although it is a turbo. Bit fiddly in places with the gear linkages and the clutch slave cylinder, but otherwise not too bad.
