I work on the 1hr per pint principle following a night out. I wouldn't have 3pints at 3pm and feel happy driving at 6pm though, unless I had a decent meal.

6 beers (pints) = 12ish units depending on strength
6 jd's (singles) = 6 units
18 in total. Normally your liver will break down 1 unit of alcohol per hour. So 18 hours ish until your body is clear. YOu got in at 3am and used the car at 6 pm giving your body 15 hours off the booze. You may have been ok if your last drink was at 2am say and you had eaten something

If you drink a lot regularly, your body will produce more of the enzymes that break down the alcohol, and you may process 3 or 4 units per hour, rather than the 1 or 2 units an hour that lightweights manage

Yup, as said lots of people forget a pint is 2 units.
Pilots get taught the above method, and don't forget that for the first hour after your first drink, your body will not yet be breaking alcohol down. So, if you start drinking at 8pm, and finish at 2am, using the 6 pints and 6 single JD's as mentioned above, the timeline would beassuming 2 drinks an hour, 1 pint + 1 short single = 3 units)
8PM : start drinking.
9PM : 1st unit starts to break down
10PM: 2nd unit starts to break down
11PM: 3rd unit starts to break down
12:01AM: 4th unit starts to break down
1AM : 5th unit starts to break down
2AM: stop drinking.
So whilst you are out, you only loose 5 units. working on the 1 unit per hour, it would be another 13 hours until you are safe to drive again, i.e 3PM !!
I know a few people who have been done the morning after, it is worrying how far over the limit you could still be at 9am the next day. Again , Pilots work off the mantra "12 hours bottle to throttle" ... Worth thinking about

But the 1 unit/hour is bullshit. For some people it's true but most serious pissheads will be able to process the booze faster.
Anyway, how can you not know you're still drunk? Personally I know when I'm drunk and know when I'm not.

How many times have you felt "rough" the morning after? I bet thousends of people drive the morning after thinking they are fine, just hung-over, but are still WAY over the limit.
Still, up to you it's your licence

you dont feel drunk tho, its a blood level limit, not how you bloody feel! You might feel fine and still be waaaay over. I have to be properly careful cos I dont get hangovers, so I wake up and get on with the day.
Some people may be able to process it faster, but its not gonna be 4 units as opposed to one. possible 1.5 or maybe 2 units per hour at a stretch Id imagine, Im only guessing tho. Anyone got any hard evidence?

the 1 unit per hour is the standard they set
just like they tell you how far youwill travel, on good tres and brakes, when you do a stop from 70 mph
just because some peolpe do it better, doens't mean that everyone will
my dad came home literally not being able to climb the stairs so we put him to bed
20 minutes later he was back down stairs in his pyjamas right as rain so it just goes to show that under different circumstances things are different
and if you've chundered it all up it will have ingested even less into your system so you "should" be free sooner
drinking water only dilutes the proccess and stops you from getting a hangover as bad as you would if you didn't and it helps flush out the kidneys too
