Mountain bike help again from the experts please! Boxxer?
Hi guys
i know i asked this last year but i havent bought anything as i was waiting for my work to join the ride to work scheme. 8 months later and we're there and i can buy a bike from 1st July
But i can only buy from one place, www.edinburghbicycle.com
initially i wanted a specialized stumpjumper http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwP...c003155c002909
but apparently my limit is £1000 they wont even let me pay the £200. anyone have experience with this?
I have also looked at the Specialized rockhopper disc
http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwP...c003155c002909
Another option is the Specialized FSR XC Comp '08
http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwP...c003155c002909
Is full suspension a bad idea?
Would i be as well with the rockhopper for £600 instead of this for £900? Guy in shop reckoned its better value getting the RH instead of FSR.
There isnt really much other choice in this shop and the other suggestions were
Revolution Triad for £799 http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwP...c003155c002909
or
Revolution Shadow for £999
http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwP...c003155c002909
Now the guy says thats there own brand bikes which kinda put me off. However he reckons that they are getting rave reviews in bike mags etc.
Im scared the resale value of the revolution wont be as much as a "named" bike. Any opinions there?
So to summarise
i can only pick from one shop
limit is £1000.
What would you have?

Can you not speak to the guy who runs the shop and get him to sell the one you want for £1000 and you arrange to pay him the extra money in cash?

chop, dont you work on the rigs?? they building a bridge out into the north sea??! LOL!
Specialized bikes are built pretty well mate. anything around that price will be more than suitable unless you inted to go out with marty or that! his bikes are MINT!
I got a cheap GT a few months ago and it was fine until i started getting into it and going to glentress etc, wheels and brakes were toast after one run!

i tried mate! i cant understand how they cant do that and write the receipt for the bike to work scheme as £1000!
max
the disc rockhopper was parked next to a non disc version in red. If im being honest i thought the red made it look "cheap" in comparison

I didnt see it in red before i ordered, and wasnt sure in the shop when i picked it up, but when it was outside it looked superb imo in the sun, liked the black wheels against the red, and looked even better with the bar ends,,, i'm the same thought that red is my fave colour,,

chop its a mtb, who cares what colour it is as its supposed to be caked in mud!!!!!
Rockhopper disc is more than enough bike for you. Given your spannering talents I would even go for the non disc as it will never see a trail. Only go disc if you think your going to do something remotely serious in bad weather imo. You might get into it and take it a bit further though if you know people who ride.
Anything under 2k and I wouldnt be seen on it anyway! lol

You want yourself the rockhopper mate, hardtail bicycles are best IMO for the riding you will do.
Unless your up for being a savage and launching yourself down every valley and cliff in the area.
If however you fancy a little bit of freeride through the woods or a steady ride through the town/local roads with the misses/mates on a sunday that Rockhopper will be best for you.
I work in the cycle industry but for a UK distributor so im not hot on the ride for bike schemes. If the bike is £600 can you have £400 to spend on goodies. That way you can add the parts you wish like better bars or brakes etc etc..
Failing all of the above this one is avaialble for 4k.

Chopper - there's no hills round ABZ from what I've seen. Just get the hardtail... It'll rust just as well in your garage as a full sus
If you want a shot on one of my bikes on saturday instead of watching taxis drive round Croft give me a shout
Seriously though - the resale value of ALL bikes is pish, but spesh put together a great package on the whole and you'd not go wrong with either the FSR or the rockhopper IMO - just go for what you can afford
Neil.

There are some cracking trails/hills round abz, just doubt chop would be on them. If the OCD kicked in once the dirt started flying I dont know what he would do!
Forget the fsr imo, more modes of failure, servicing etc etc just not needed for what you want although they are great bikes. Disc or no disc, disc would be better if you got into riding more as you will have the hubs/mounts etc for upgrading later if wanted. But you have to decide if you really will. Some of my mates still do most of the trails I do on V brakes and are out all weather all year.

i used to sort cycle to work out, i would let my customers pay towards the more expensive bike, not stricktley in the rules but never had any come back on it, best just speaking to them and seeing what they will do for you

V-brakes are mint - u dont "need" discs whatsoever - they are better, I totally agree, and easier on the hands when u are doing LOTs of downhill, but I always kept up fine with my mates on the stuff like glentress.
I recommend a 2nd hand bike - i got a total steal for 1 that had been ridden like twice...

Sorry to but in. Hoping for a little advice.
What would be the best bike to use on road/tarmac? Basically I do a 3-5miles ride just for the sake of keeping fit. The mountain bike I have now is dual suspension and I find it very hard on my knees.

the grand limit is in place because any more than that and your employer would need a special type of credit licence just for the bike to work scheme.
you could get 2 bikes on the same voucher -£500 road bike £500 mountain bike. one for summer, one for winter if you take different routes to work.
you couldn't however buy a £500 bike for yourself and the spend the remaining £500 on bikes for kids etc as kids bikes arn't used for comuting!
according to the paperwork you CAN buy a £500 bike and use the rest of your voucher to buy "safety equipment" so a helmet/lights etc... but tecnically not better spec parts.. even if you argue that better brakes are safety equipment.
the reason that you can't add to the 1000 voucher is that it is a hire purchase/lease type aggrement.
at the end of the period you can buy the bike for a small sum (usually around£30!! or 5% of the original price) or technically it belongs to the people who issue your voucher.... the loan company or your employer
if you paid 200 towards a 1000 bike who would the 1200 bike belong to in the end? its fine if you pay up but if you kick up a fuss the bike shop would be in the shit. and poss loose bike to work scheme.
this is also the reason why you can't buy better spec parts... a £500 bike the £500 bits... what happens to the standard parts? they would also belong to the hire/loan/your employer company at the end of the period.
you will find some shops might bend different parts of these rules... they want your voucher in the til after all. but if they are caught bending the rules they are taken off the bike to work scheme....
hope that makes some sense
rob.
